I figure if nothing bad has happened in 15,000 kilometers I'll just continue to put up with it. (The noise that is.) But... I have very little faith in dealers anymore. Glad that this is my last car.

for a 20-30? year old snow blower, it's got a way over-complicated electrical cut-off system...

next project is cutting it all apart except the key system, and seeing if my problem is either the magneto or the 'safety' system...
Bubba suggests that you wire the magneto directly to the spark plug(s).

Reminds me of when I was a very young kid and bought my first dirt bike (Hodaka/Steens). I got it real cheap because the previous owner said it hadn't ran in a couple years. It had no spark. I pushed it home, took the kill switch off the handlebars and fired it up.

Magnetos don't get shot.

Iffen you don't believe that, stick a spark plug wire in a magneto and hold onto the other end of the wire then pull on the starter rope -

not that you want to of course, but shouldn't you have some recourse on that due to the fact that it was brought in specifically for that issue 4 times before the warranty and they couldn't locate it?

reminds me of the generator my dad found a few years ago. same deal, great compression, carb looked new, definitely getting fuel.

finally figured out that there was a low oil cutoff hidden away as part of the cutoff switch. the oil was about 1/64th of a quart low. literally put a few drops in and it fired right up.

but to get to that point, we pulled all of the cutoff stuff off. i figured i'd just pull the plug wire if it worked.

well, it fired right up without all the kill switch stuff in the way. and shocked the hell out of me as i tried pulling the plug for what felt like 5 minutes, while my dad laughed harder and harder the longer i tried

my only regret is that i didn't make him pull the plug so i could laugh.

Tell that to the B17 that crashed a couple years ago. Shoddy maintenance by all appearances, but still. At least I think it was magneto... Both. Probably on multiple engines.

That was questionable. Sounded like there were more than a few 'homebrew' repairs on that bird that didn't help matters

Well, if you are referring to the B-17 Nine-O-Nine that went down, it's my understanding that a lot of faulty maintenance and crew screw ups was responsible. Those 4 engines should have been able to bring that plane back down safely with half of the magnetos whacked out.

We will have to ask ol @Ultramaroon about that, he knows about airplanes. AND, if he doesn't agree with me, then NEVER FUCKING MIND -

Well, you see, Bubba's grandfather told me that each radial of cylinders had two magnetos so that if half of the spark plugs fouled the other magneto would take over and keep the engine running.
