Registry Thread: Failure After J02 Recall

@mmich101 Welcome to my world. My car has been sitting in the driveway since the same thing happened last August. A couple of times I got close to finding a used engine worth buying but each time something happened that zapped it before I got it. I ended up buying a pretty kick ass replacement vehicle for less than a questionable used engine so at least I have time to find a good one.

i got my 2013 frs with the j02 recall done a month ago before i found about this issue. i am now scared shitless that engine might blow too. should i just sell my car ASAP so it won't blow up in my face?

The car's back! Yay! Drove it to the airfield, then home at the end of the day... maybe ~50 miles? So far, so good. Car's now parked since the registration is now over a year out of date and I'm probably going to have to visit the DMV in-person to figure out how to re-register it (didn't receive a bill for my 2021 registration at all since the 2020 reg process was never completed). I also need to figure out what I'm going to do from a maintenance perspective... obviously I'm on break-in again, so gentle driving and no high RPM for a while. I might drop the oil tomorrow just to see if any solids fall out-- RTV or metal from the new block / camshafts / cam carriers. New oil and then run that for maybe the next 500 miles? It's also tempting to drop the oil pain and just have a look at that oil suction screen again, but since IIRC that also seals with RTV I guess each time you sneak a peek you're risking the same goddamn loose sealant problem again. At least it's on the bottom of the engine this time, so any scrapings aren't going to fall up into the engine? :|

One thing that spooks me though is that after the original recall procedure, the oil starvation wasn't apparent until I revved the engine up-- it ran "fine" on the way home with normal surface street / highway driving (RPM under 5k). If there's any problem this time around, I feel like I'd rather know sooner than later, but I also don't want to rev the engine out on a set of brand-new moving parts.

i sold mine right after the recall.. didn't trust the motor after the recall... now is a good time to unload the car too since the used car market is stupid high.. i sold my car via carvana.. might be worth looking into their offer

Just ran mine through Carvana for giggles to see what they offered.

Mine is a 2013, one minor accident fully repaired, 180,000+ miles. Some paint chips.

The offer was $3,303. Think I'll pass.

I was really hoping I wouldn't have to post in this thread... but here I am.

Vehicle Mileage: 63k
Vehicle Make: 2013 Scion FR-S
Mileage After Recall Performed: 10k (1 year ago)
Symptom(s): See failures
Failure: Blew a hole in the block, which started a fuel fire.
State: CA
Is Dealership Offering Repair: Will update post if I go this route.

Was at a track day and during the cooldown lap I hear a pop, lost power, all of the warning lights came on and then I started to see smoke. Pull off to the side and that's when the flames started being very visible. Luckily the safety crew was there quickly to put the fire out, so it was contained to the engine bay.

It looks like there was collateral damage with a fuel line when the block decided to blow up, which is what fueled the fire. The car still smells strongly of fuel.

Does anyone have advise on next steps if I want to see if the valve recall was the culprit? I want to take the oil pan off myself to inspect the pickup, but I'm doing more research if it needs to be done by a dealer or documented in a certain way to be used as proper evidence. If I can get things fixed or compensated by Toyota, that would be ideal. Any advice from anyone who has gone through the process would be appreciated.


My car has been completely stock, except for an oil cooler, so boost isn't part of the equation. I used Motul 300V which gets swapped out every 3 or so track days (3k-5k miles), so improper oil or levels shouldn't have been an issue.

U're probably out of the recall extended warranty period and u blew it during a track day... Doubt the dealership will work with u on this.. prob should plan to part out the car soon

I suggest you pressure wash the engine, dry it out, repair the fuel line, then see if it starts.

That's what I'm figuring. Doing some research to see if there is a chance, but I'm not holding my breath.

This is correct, lol. What's crazy is all the electronics in the interior still worked, even though the battery was significantly damaged. I disconnected it because there is still fuel everywhere, but I like to think my FRS was still trying to perform for me.
