to early to tell, and any car can last a long time if you treat it right. My friend has 600k+ miles on his evo 8 but it looks like it only has 60k.

I don't think Scion paint is that great in general either from talking to a few detailer friends. All the new environmental regs are really taking a toll on the paint quality of most reasonably priced cars.
My old 2.2L Impreza L wagon had 212k on it when I sold it. No major maintenance aside from a new clutch at ~170k, and timing belt at ~150k. Ran like a champ. I drove it hard for the period it was mine too. Zero rust issues. Most Subaru problems are very specific things. Ringlands on the 08 STi's, headgaskets on the older 2.5's, Turbos on the last model Legacy GT's. If you know about those specific issues and plan your maintenance and/or mods around them, you will do well. If you ignore them, they'll bite you. But that goes for any car. The rear subframes on the older 3 series, rust on older Accords, valvetrain sludge buildup on the mid 90's Toyota engines (the 5S-FE was pretty bad at this). If taken care of, the chances of having to worry about catastrophic failure of anything on a Subaru are pretty small. The older 5 speeds did not have the most robust transmissions, but if treated well (read: don't powershift into 2nd) they will work well enough for a very long time. The headgasket issue on the 2.5's is basically solved if you replace the gaskets with the updated design, and the actual number of ringland failures on cars that haven't been modified is quite small. Measurable, but small. The problem Subaru has with it's reputation when it comes to reliability stems from the car's popularity with younger males and the accessibility of the older WRX's. A turbo engine is just a more complicated item than your typical Honda I-4. Take someone who's used to bashing the hell out of their civic, give them a $5,000 2002 WRX, and they're going to beat on it. Turbos don't necessarily like being thrashed when cold or put away without a cool down. AWD transmissions are by nature more complicated, and on top of that, having 4 tires to put the power to the pavement takes away a lot of the built in safety factor that exists in 2wd cars. Drop the clutch at 4k in a Honda and one tire is going to spin. Drop the clutch at 4k in a Subaru and you have 4 tires trying to send the car forward very suddenly, and that's a lot more grip to contend with. In cars that are built for it, it allows ridiculous acceleration off the line (GT-R with launch control, and even it has had issues). For cars that aren't built for that (WRX), the transmission is the weakest link in the chain and will break. Nathan |

The other night on Top Gear (Best winter car), Rut was driving a Subaru wagon with over 200k, it still performed all the tasks and in the end they drove the sh!t out of it.

I saw somewhere where a couple people had like 500k+ miles on there Subaru's and they were still running. Also heard avg life of a Subaru is about 300k and if really taken care of they will last up to 500k. I have no proof but that's what I've heard.

I'll bet the engine, drivetrain outlast the body and interior.

Sadly my steering has gone bad after only 1200km and 4 weeks of ownership. though that's not technically the engine.

I've often wondered the same thing as the OP...how will these cars hold up to some mileage? This is my first Subaru built car. Most of my imports have been used Hondas, and some of them haven't really been overly well cared for before I got my hands on them. I've seen lots of Hondas like that with 2, 3, and even 400,000 on the clock, and they just keep going 'til the body falls apart. The same goes for old Toyotas. I've noticed that Subarus in the hands of people who aren't on top of maintenance and appearance start to look and act pretty rough at a much younger age. I'm pretty anal about maintenance, so I'm not too worried about it, but the thought did cross my mind before I bought my FR-S.

the key word for today is "Maintainence" anything well maintained can outlast the owner.
