This was precisely my fear before taking it in. Risk catastrophic engine failure at any time on my perfectly running car (84.5k miles), or open Pandora's box with the chance for a laundry list of problems with the repair. I'm hoping my issues have been resolved, but time will tell...

UPDATE:

Service called and said they pulled the oil pan and found the #4 cylinder rod bearing spun.

Options are:

Dealer will obtain used, low-mileage engine, from LKQ Motors, from a VIN that's not associated with the recall, with a one-year warranty and put that in.

Or:

Start sourcing parts to put a new short block together.

He said he will contact me by the end of day with a plan for each.

Im also having issues, first thing was an oil leak coming from the oil pan. they fixed it free of charge but my other issue they couldn't replicate it and now im stuck lol. truth is i dont even know if my issue would have been caused by the recall work but its weird that it started happening right after i got the car back.

Exactly what I'm struggling with. These incidents are by no means flukes at this point...there is a problem with the recall itself. Either insufficient technician training, or a specific step needs to be modified. Either way, my car is still in my driveway. Or in the parking lot at work, as it were... Either way, no dealership yet.

What he said was, if they determine that the work they performed caused the engine failure, then yes they will fix it for free. But they determined that unknown forces unrelated to the Recall Work caused the damage.

When I told the Toyota Mgr that it would have been better to have Subaru do the recall work, he started that he already thought of that and said Toyota Corp said "No". These are Toyota cars, using Toyota parts, and are in Toyota's books.

From a business perspective, that makes sense when dealing with that. Sending the cars to Subaru makes sense to the consumer, but the bookkeeping would be a pain to both Corporations.

I think it has to do with Toyota techs working on Subie engine. Majority of the reported bad fixes are FRS.

UPDATE:

Toyota Mgr called back with prices for a used, low- mileage engine for $7.5k, or a new short block for $8.5k.

ME:. "Are you telling me I'm paying? You said..."

HIM: "Oh, you must have misunderstood what I said..."

ME: "Why would you think that? What's my options? How do I escalate this? And how am I supposed to get to work?"

HIM: "We can rent you a..."

So... I'm on the phone with Toyota Corporate. They tried calling Toyota of Santa Cruz but everyone was "unavailable at the moment".


I'm really bummed because, up until today, Toyota of Santa Cruz has been really good to me. I feel... cheated.

Does this mean the "warranty" on the recall work is basically bogus? They ruin your engine and then want you to pay $7-8k? Multiple people have the same story to tell.

Sad. If they don't want to stand behind their work, they need to let FR-S owners have work done by Subaru the first time around.

Trying not to lose my faith in Toyota over things I read on the interwebs...I don't mean the techs, not really their fault they're unfamiliar with a boxer engine. But the fault of dealers and corporate if they don't take care of you when their techs are unable to properly fulfill the recall.

I figured they were going to make you pay for it. Unless your car is within the 3/36 warranty or 5/60 powertrain then everyone will be out of luck after the recall. The recall does not state if catastrophic failure occurs after the recall that they are responsible for it, especially if it doesn't relate to the "valve springs". And most dealership will not own up to it if it was technician error. Toyota and Subaru know they have multiple issues with the early FA20 but only now they want to do something about it after all affected vehicles are out of factory warranty. You could escalate the issue to service director or corporate and they could "goodwill" the LKQ engine or the needed parts for a short block and then you just pay labor. I prefer the LKQ because its plug and play vs the tech messing up again if they did. That's the best and maybe only scenario from here. Hoping for the best!

I was told that they determined that the work they performed did not contribute to the failure of the engine. I need to ask them to explain this to me in detail.

Note to self: Next time I get a recall notice, wait.
