Well now, @exE36M3 , I had that same misconception before ol @Ultramaroon educated me .......

Apparently, the FR-S has an "active" release bearing (TOB). It runs anytime the engine is running. However, it just "works" when the clutch is pushed in. A very slight pressure from the slave cylinder keeps it in contact with the fingers of the pressure plate at all times.

So, if is really bad, it can howl without the clutch being pushed in.

For the record, I didn't assign a specific name to the system. I don't really know if it's called anything special. It's a run-of-the-mill, self-adjusting hydraulic clutch. And yes, the TOB is rotating 100% of the time. ...unless it's starting to seize. Then it screeches.

Well then, I think I will change my reference name of that kind of TOB form "active" to "constant-contact".

That's more descriptive ......

I think it's just a cable-versus-hydraulic thing, no? I'm with you. I just wonder if there are any functional variants.

Yep, best I can figure is that most all hydraulic clutches have constant contact TOBs.
