Hey guys! I just ceramic coated my car with Avalon Kong’s Armor Shield. I am getting a duckbill for my car that is held on by 3M tape. Anyone have any knowledge on whether the spoiler will held on okay for not? Thank you all.

No, you need to prep the surface for the adhesive.

1. Remove all wax/protectant/coating/film
2. Wipe with alcohol
3. Optional: adhesion promoter
4. Install part

I just got ceramic coated it today! How would I go about removing it?

Depends on the coating. I’d ask the installer.

Bubba says to quickly swipe the area you plan on sticking the tape on with a cloth baby diaper soaked on alcohol. Wipe dry. Apply the tape. If it won't tug off with a gentle tug, it should stay.

It would have been best if you told the detailer that you were going to put on the spoiler or least wait until you had installed it first before coating. You're gonna have to go back to the to see if they're willing to attack the coat on the trunk. It's not as easy as 1-2-3 depending on how good the coating is. Since you just got it done, there might be a chance they won't have to work as hard to remove but that's a maybe.

Worst case you either wait until the coat wears down or you just try the stickiest tape available and hope it doesn't come off. You could attack it yourself but it will just take a ton of chemical stripping and washes. Polishing is also an option. I'd suggest removing the trunk so you don't mess up the coating on the rest of the car while it cures if you experiment it yourself. .

The only way to remove the coating is to polish the area. A cutting polish would make quick work of it.

You would Likely be fine to stick the wing on with the coating. Use an IPA wipe or something like Carpro eraser before sticking it on to make sure the surface is free of oils.

No guarantees though, if you decide to polish the coating off, I'd draw a tapeline where the wing will go, the. Tape around the area so you don't polish somewhere you don't want too.

i would clean the area with window cleaner after washing the car, stick it on, check that it stays (yank, crank, and jiggle it by hand) after the immediate fit, and then let it sit for a day for the tape to fully set.

in my experience screwing around with sticking random crap on cars and trucks, the genuine 3m extreme-bond tape rarely lets go spontaneously with the above procedure--if it sticks in the first 10 minutes and passes the jiggle test, it's not going anywhere in 1 year unless some outside force gets to it.

there's been exactly 4 situations where it has not held after the above, and they've all got caveats.

1. trd-style louvers started coming up after install. firstly i'm not convinced the included tape was a genuine 3m product. and the bolts that attached the louver to the stick-on bolt pads that attached to the rear window were overly torqued because i'm excessive.

2. a minion figurine attached with the tape to the inside rear window upside down fell down off the tape(tape remained on the glass) after 3 months. it did not pass the pull test in the first minutes of setting up, but i stuck it anyways.

3. tv 'mudflap antenna' stuck to the wall 'temporarily' fell down after 1 year. i used too little tape-- about 2 dime-size squares in the top corners.

4. metal street sign fell down sponteously after 4 years. i used 2 pieces about the size of a quarter to hold it up. had i used a full-width piece on both sides, it likely wouldn't have fallen.

I would be a little worries about anything held by 3m tape only but that's me. If I ever change my spoiler I will go with a full carbon fiber trunk including the new spoiler. Just my 2 cents. Good on you to ask though, I would not have thought to ask about adhesion on ceramic coating.

Try to clean/wipe the area down as well as possible and Use the 3m adhesive promoter. It gets a lot of airflow at 120+mph, probably similar forces to you doing a pullup on it. Although size and how much it stuck up makes a big difference too.
