HID Driving Lights and kamikaze kangaroos

Finally near %100 happy with the HID driving light setup I've added, they make a world of difference out on the open road spotting suicidal kangaroos!

Ideally they should sit higher on the face of the car for better angle of reach, but they simply look too ungainly for a non rally car, so I've had to compromise. Positioned so they have minimal effect on airflow into the oil cooler (where the old fog lights sat) and minimal impact on the radiator intake, and don't shield the existing headlight spread... and look OK too.

Due to the amount of plastic in the front end of a modern car forward of the radiator, the trick is to get a very rigid bracket onto the crash bar, of sufficient thickness to almost eliminate any shake or vibration. (Light weight driving lamp units help too). Unfortunately the easier option of a small light stabiliser bar isn't really viable.

These are 170mm in diameter, with 70w HID globes, just uprated from 50w HID globes.

I'll try to find the pics. Its basically 6mm thick solid stainless steel bar, bent 90deg, mounted with M10 bolts through the crash bar. Heavy...but strong (in fact the crash bar deflects before the SS mount does.

many people are moving away from roof or hood mounted lighting, as it tends to reflect off the hood, requiring specific hood vinyl treatments, or will light up all of the dust in the air over the hood, making it harder to see down the road. both of which make the light more of a novelty than anything else.

If it works, makes sense, just as with fog lights, where one of bits to not reflect off particles/moisture in air was to place lights low (in addition to vertically focus/limit beam a lot). Low mounted lights might be more susceptible of more damage though imho.
