Tire blowout on truck in front of FR-S... Ouch!

Last night south bound on I-5 from Portland to Eugene. A truck had a tire blowout in heavy traffic throwing a shredded tire in the FR-S's path. My wife was driving, and said there was nothing she could do. Our FR-S lost its inner fender guard. Got its bumper cracked and dented. Scratched side marker light. Broke LED driving light. This is all I could see so far...

Just so you know, I was very happy to hear my wife was ok and no one was hurt. She was driving with two of her girlfriends. They pulled over right away and called me. She feels guilty enough without me saying anything.

*I had zip-ties and the small bungie in the trunk for this exact situation* Be prepared! They were able to tie the front pieces up so they weren't dragging.

Has anyone priced a bumper? The inner fender? Also, are there any mesh grill kits available yet?

Pay for three years of insurance rate increases or pay out-of-pocket. That is the question!

Ouch! That sucks.

From what I heard, parts for repair are an issue. Expect a wait.

Shoot! I hope parts wont be a problem!

It was dark. The truck did not stop. A couple of nice college kids did though. Good to know there are still helpful people out there.

BRZ front bumper was $299 list at dealer took 3 weeks...really not half as bad as they said it would be, dealer estimated mid september availability.

However...I wouldn't be surprised if the Toyota bumper costs more.

As someone who drives trucks on a regular basis. I can say that if it was just one tire...they probably didn't notice. That's because if one tire blows, the other tire next to it takes the weight and you just keep going. Thats part of the reason trucks have dualies, one for redundancy in case of tire failure, two because it helps distribute the load over a greater contact patch for less wear on the tire and less wear on the road. Most likely the trucker didn't notice he lost a tire until the next time he stopped...or maybe 10 miles down the road.

Would you say that this was most likely a re-tread? I think those things should be illegal!

Yeah, I figured the truck didn't even notice.

Nitro - Sorry to hear about your bumper too!

Update: called my Scion dealership. The bumper is so new, they couldn't give me a price. The inner fender liner was 65$. They are still looking for the little grill insert price. lol

Thats why truckers hate it when you try and draft them...

Are you sure that the insurance company will raise your rates for something that is clearly not your fault?

Never a good idea to ride behind a truck like that because of that, not to mention all the rocks they through up. I avoid them as much as possible.

I dodged a similar but smaller bullet in my first few days of ownership as I documented here.

So glad to hear everyone was OK.

Is it just me or does it always seem that things like this happen when the car is new? MomHawk had only had her '05 Mustang for two days when some guy on a Harley cut a corner too close at a stoplight (she was stopped) and drug his left peg from the middle of the front bumper to the edge at about 10MPH before he managed to stop. She said it was just sickening to listen to when it happened. Cost the guy $500 to replace and paint the bumper cover. She hasn't even had a close call since.
