AT VS Manuel Based off Life length
Its a common fact that Older AT Transmission will go out faster then MT.
Is it still a concern that with spirited driving/track the AT will have to be replaced sooner then the MT. i have and Avalon (AT) and a tundra (AT), they both hit over 250k on the tranny, but these cars wont get abused like a FRS or BRZ will. |

You have to do maintenance on MT trannys, so you end up paying to keep that in shape anyway...
There is no way to tell at this point to tell how reliable the trannys are though. One can assume that since its an Aisin box, it should be fairly reliable, but who knows...

In stock form, I doubt this 200chp motor is going to be stressing either the MT or AT much, even with "spirited" driving. 200 odd crank hp, lower torque, and RWD only is not going to be placing a lot of stress on the transmission and rear diff. I don't see any issue with either lasting 10-20 years, which is how long it's going to take the average driver to reach 200k+.
If I'm wrong, we'll find out in 10 years... Regards, Paul Hansen www.avoturboworld.com www.facebook.com/BRZSportsCarClub |

If you're worried about AT life, put in an aftermarket trans oil cooler.

I doubt that will even be required on this car, but let's wait and see.

Some Aisin auto transmissions have failed early. Namely those in VWs and in the Mini Cooper S.
Most of the failures had to do with solenoids, and the "suggestion" of "lifetime ATF." By 80,000 miles in some cars the AT fluid inside is cooked. So it needs to be changed/flushed. However these numbers are really low, and really other than the one in my Ford Focus, a long time ago, I don't remember an AT failing ever. Manual, needs clutch changes, some grind gears, and of course eventual fluid changes. I'd say there's an equal amount of chance for something to go wrong, but the AT will be more expensive to fix. |
