Gen2 Transmission swap?
So after reading/watching reviews on the new GR86, I've heard that Toyota (and almost certainly Subaru as well) have strengthened the transmission for the additional power and made cross-gate shifting better (2-3, 4-5). I even saw somewhere that they strengthened 4th specifically, which from reading through some posts here, seems like the most common failure point of these transmissions.
I was curious what we think of a Gen2 trans swap if a Gen1 car grenades it's trans. Being that it's the same chassis, I feel like it might just bolt up in the same spot with relative ease, but I'm not 100% confident. Curious to hear everyone's thoughts |

Incredibly unlikely to fit. And then you have electronics to deal with. I wouldn't count on it working on any practical fashion

I'd actually be pretty shocked if the transmission bellhousing didn't have the same bolt pattern. Mechanically, I'd bet it'll bolt in and the output is probably the same. The electronics may be different though.

We will of course find out down the road when people start getting their hands on these. |

I was more curious about the electronics. I'm not sure how much the electronics are involved with a MT. I know there's a gear indicator and some interfacing, but being that you operate most of it yourself, not sure how much of a dealbreaker electronics would be if they weren't compatible |

I bet this thing will fit just fine. In fact, I plan to swap transmissions in the future. I might get the gen2 before doing a CD009 swap. A gen2 swap will be a minimum. A CD009 will be if I stay with this platform and want to bury another large chunk of money into said transmission while building my motor for more power.

There is no gear indicator on the transmission itself. Should just be a reverse and neutral sensor.

Correct. People mix this up here all the time. The "indicated" gear is simply an internal calculation based on engine speed, vehicle speed, final drive ratio, and approximate tire diameter.

Well I could not for the life of me figure out why the car needed to know neutral. You can’t start it in neutral. Dug into the wire manual and found it. It is tied into the cruse control. Tested it today kick the transmission in neutral without depressing the clutch it turns off cruse. Wonder who blew an engine doing that for them to add it?

Did the auto transmission change? If not... Bolt-up seems likely.
I'm mostly ignorant on the gen2 stuff, but this one has me intrigued as a just-in-case I need to know some day.
