I would say that maybe there is something worth reading on the whole post lol. Maybe it will give more context. Ive been thinking about tracking seriously and would be even more comfortable with a co-seater with experience, but I am afraid you bite haha. JK.

You guys are arguing a lot about oil weights when GT86 cup cars ran 5W50.

what I don't understand about all of this is why Toyota/Subaru didn't come across this problem during the development of the FA24 Gen2 BRZ/GR86.
surely they would have tracked this car hard during development and should have been monitoring oil pressures and temps during testing as well. |

The engine has to be OK for a *very* wide range of oil viscosities. Viscosity is *very much* a function of temperature. 5w30 and 10w40 at track operating temps of 270F+ are thinner than 0w20 at normal-usage oil temps. Go back and look at the plot in post #5. I run 0w20 in the colder months, but during track season when temps where I live are never below about 50F, and on-track oil temps are 270F+, 0w20 is IMO not the best choice...

In other news, I won my time trial at Thompson (CT) Speedway yesterdee! 1:21.489, nearly a second faster with the new car than I ever went in the '17, despite having to run 200 lb heavier and on 225s instead of 245s. 2nd-gen is legit a much faster car. I just hope the engine hangs in there *fingers crossed*...

Let's not forget that fuel efficiency is the ONLY reason manufacturers are developing engines to survive thinner lube.
Let's also remember that this thread has more to do with the engine's vulnerability to oil starvation. It's a boxer. What else would we expect? Dry sump is the answer. With realistic expectations for manufacturing/build quality, some engines will inevitably give up the ghost when pushed.

You could add an accusump to mitigate the pressure loss in corners, or don’t do track days on stupid-high grip tires on a stock car, you know unless you WANT all the oil to go on one side of the engine. |

You think they designed it on 0w20? LOL The 0w20 is ONLY in the crank case to meet the EPA mandated fuel economy numbers. Not because it protects the engine better, because it doesn't.
