Traditional:

Fresh lime juice 4 oz -- and I mean squeeze some limes! Using reconsistuted lime juice is cheating and doesn't taste nearly as good.
Fresh lemon juice 2 oz -- ditto with the lemon!
2 oz of tequila (I like "1800" or Patron)
1 oz of Grand Marnier or Cointreau (Cointreau is the traditional orange liqueur used.)
1 oz of Limoncello (the limoncello is what makes this really work!)
4-8 oz of simple syrup (less if you like it less sweet)
for frozen, 1-2 cups of ice, blend until slushy.

Salt the glass rim if you like. To salt the rim properly, use one of the squeezed limes from above and run it along the rim, then invert the glass into a layer of salt on a small plate and give it a slight twist. I recommend Morton's Kosher salt for this as it is the right texture.

For on the rocks, just pour into two large margarita glasses over fresh ice and serve.

I've heard it suggested that you can add up to 4 oz of Corona beer into the above mix and somehow it improves the flavor. Can't say that I agree.

The tequila is key. Don't use Cuervo Gold, it is made of grain neutral spirits and water with some color and flavors blended in. Also, don't use a margarita mix. No margarita should be the color of a green neon sign.

Simple syrup is super easy to make. Just add 1 cup of cane sugar to 1 cup of water, boil until all the sugar dissolves, then allow to cool. Done. Didn't cost you 6 bucks for a 12 oz bottle, either.

If my wife knew you guys were talking Margaritas she would be here with about 100 different types. Try to tell her any are not good and you will have a battle that would make the worst "needs more power" debate look like a kindergarten squabble.
