Its momentary belt slippage when the compressor is engage under load...common m many vehicles since the advent of 134A. And it is worse in hot weather. Higher temps mean higher head pressure, which means higher starting load.
Belt dressing will silence it short term. Tightening the belt will fix it but that increases the load on the shaft bearings. Better just to ignore it, IMO. |

Thread Necro!
I just started noticing this same chirp and I actually captured it on film. Once the engine rev dies down you'll notice the AC kick on and chirp. |

Need to resurrect this topic.
I'm having a squeak issue with my BRZ. After searching the whole internet and all available forums, this sounds the closest. Here are my symptoms: * Makes a high-pitch chipmunk-like "squeak" noise every 15-25 seconds, only when moving. Nothing while at rest. I noticed it around 3000-4000 rpm. * Does not happen always. Perhaps 2 out of 5 times I drive. * Does not depend on outside temperatures. * It does not happen when I take it to a dealer for diagnosis * This is NOT the fuel pump continuous chirp. I hear that too. Does any one have any videos so I can compare? I tried to record my audio, but I couldn't capture the noise. |

You have a belt-driven load device (the compressor) that cycles on and off. Under running conditions it starts under load (there is still significant head pressure). When that load is suddenly applied to the drive belt, there's brief momentary slippage. Slippage = squeak. It's pretty much like squealing your tires...power suddenly applied to a static load. This has been a characteristic of many auto A/C systems ever since we transitioned off of R12. You can stop the chirp if you tighten belt enough, but to me, the increased load on the shaft bearing isn't worth the "none-problem" of the chirp. |

I have heard of a case where the noise actually came feom a bad clutch throwour bearing and slave cylinder (https://www.caranddriver.com/amp/rev...wrap-up-review). That's why I'm concerned - what if it's not the AC in my case, but something more serious?

Turn off A/C and defrost and see if the sound goes away. Pretty simple diagnostic. |

Taken it to a Subaru dealer. He inspected and says it's clutch throwout bearing. Apparently he has 25 years of experience, so I guess I'll take his word for it.
What bothers me is that I never abused the transmission or the clutch. Yet my bearing didn't last 22,000 miles! |

Welp, so, if it is a bad TOB, I reckon it's time to replace/have it replaced.
Don't wait till it explodes and takes everything with it, like ol @Tcoat did - He has post explosion pictures - very messy. |
