Have not logged into the forum in a long time but as an outsider and seeing the new reveal, I think it's an evolution for the car. Exterior wise, I don't mind the aggressive lines but am not a fan of the rear tail lights. I like the interior and and the original FT86 seats were some of the best ones out there, and the new car looks the same.
The radio looks awkward, I like the physical buttons but it seems like a lot of waster real estate and the screen could have been even bigger. But I am nitpicking. Power wise, I get the NA 2.4. The goal with the original car was an NA engine and to keep cost inline I think this engine makes sense. It seems like a marginal bump in power, but I still suspect the power will be one of the biggest negatives about the car and a reason why Toyota/Subaru should consider a TRD/STI model with FI. Pricing will be critical especially as it relates to the new 400z, and an all new Mustang coming up soon. |

I dont mind the interior as much now after letting it stew for a bit, but what bugs me the most is that the touchscreen looks like a 90's era tablet stuck onto the dash or hanging off the vents...
and it looks like a completely separate piece that doesnt fit with the design elements of the hvac controls below it. The fact that the dash doesnt really have a cohesive design compared to the first gen doesnt help it. Its why i hope the Toyota version looks a little better on the inside with whatever screen setup they're going to end up using. I dont like digital clusters all that much, this one looks mostly fine.....since all it looks like is that they just made the current analog one into a digital version and enclosed it in a boxer shaped screen bezel. Is it me, or after 24 hours of looking at this thing, does it already feel a bit dated? Strange.
Anyway, I can't say that I hate it. Has a little Cayman vibe to it, which is hardly an insult. The interior looks fantastic (hope they hired a new VVH engineer), the specs are about the best we could really hope for, and it seems like they're even keeping the price in check. All in all, not bad. The exterior styling does sorta turn my nose up, though. The fuel door? The line on the trunklid? The tail lights? The front plate mount? It's not that it's totally ugly, it's just sorta "why on earth would you do that? If this were a brand new model, we'd probably all be flipping out at how amazing and beautiful and perfect it was. But since it has to be compared to the 1st gen, of course it's going to fall flat in some areas of comparison. The older sister is always the prettiest, isn't she? That said, I'm hoping Toyota polishes the blemishes (so I can buy one in like 4 years). |

I had paused a video I was watching, came back to it and had to snip this. The car looks GREAT. I love the look of the current car, love this one too. It's 95% the same car with the same proportions, but with different styling details. I like the sorta aggro front of my '17, I also like this cleaner front end without the big black plastic moustache. I like the kinda gimmicky fender bumps on my car, I also like these more elegantly elongated fender pontoons. I like the '17s angery headlights, I like these too.
I'm glad to see some new design language applied to what remains one of my favorite cars on the market. I'm looking forward to see the Toyota version too! |

Having marinated on this a bit, I've come to the conclusions that I'm definitely happy with the important upgrades (engine, torques, etc), but not so much the aesthetic changes inside and out.
I miss the humps over the front wheels. I think their absence is incongruous with the lines of the rest of the car. They've done a better job of integrating the fenders into the original lines compared to the 1.5 face lift, but it's still obviously a different front clip stuck onto the original structure. Looking at the side profile, the front end is just too flat. I do dig the functional vents though. In a world of fake vents everywhere *cough* Supra *cough*, it's awesome they put real ones on this, and I also like the other functional aero bits. The rear end isn't bad - not convinced on the tail lights, but I'm sure the aftermarket will provide options. It all looks a little "high" in the rear like an Eclipse or something. The interior is fine, though losing the longer armrests with the up-turned grip on the doors is annoying. The center armrest looks like a step backwards. The raised portion is too far back and that exposed cupholder will be right where your elbow wants sit. Also - it sounds terrible in those videos. I mean like, PS2 Gran Turismo car-sound terrible. If those are fake engine sounds, the first thing I would do is try and find a way to turn them off. So yeah, seems like great mechanical improvements, but some day-to-day living stuff changed not entirely for the better. And aesthetically it's a lateral move at best for me. I'm curious to see Toyota's version. I suspect the rear end will look the same, and we are pretty certain the front end has a much larger opening, but it seems like it's also lost the curves. Quote:

Questions I still have:
Wheel bolt pattern (still thinking they're 5x100! could be wrong!) Gearing and final drive PP details. Surprised it wasn't mentioned at all. Maybe it's not a first year thing. ...and then a bunch of nerdy suspension technical stuff I won't find out until I'm underneath the car. I'm pretty pumped they switch to Pilot Sport 4 tires. From my perspective, its the TQ increase in the main power band that will be most significant to the overall enjoyment of the car. One can always want for more power, but once it gets driven, I expect it to be what the BRZ was always meant to be, nimble, connected to the driver and fun. I have been boosted for over 3 years now and enjoy it, and I’m sure tuners will be able to make great things with that 2.4 for those who have the extra cash.
Would a stock turbo on this car be nice? Sure, but at the same time I could not help but thinking that it wasn’t the right answer to stay true to its original vision of a fun, pure, affordable and unique sports car that is a great tuning platform. Similarly it appears to be an even stronger (stiffer, lower, vented wheels, increased displacement) platform to build upon for track/mods enthusiasts, which in my mind is also part of the platform’s DNA. I can’t help but thinking about how much potential the car has... As for looks, Cars usually look better in real life, and these are the easiest things to tweak in model years, so I would not fret this too much... Plus when you’re at the wheel, all of that disappear to make room for driver enjoyment, time and space no longer matter... Cheers! Quote:

Can't wait for savagegeese on YouTube to get a hold of one. They're doing a good job bringing technical more engineering side to reviews lately.
I'm curious how they did engine tuning this time around. Will it be factory tuned on 93 again or did they sacrifice that HP/L to get it safely tuned on 91. |
