I don't have a well, but I have tons a friends and family that do. It depends entirely on your water and what issue you are trying to resolve as a conditioner and softener do different things. My uncle uses both at his house as he has a softener for hard water and it smells like sulfur really bad without the conditioner.

Lol, this reminds me of one of those threads newbs start that ask "should I go turbo or supercharger" with no details.

My parents had a softener for their well, but I've never had either, just town water.

So, where I live, all houses have some sort of well and use a septic for waste water. Generally well water is great because it is naturally filtered, but it can be chemically hard, which is our issue. It leaves red gunk stains over long periods of time. It doesn't smell, which is good, just hard.

The overall goal I want to achieve is to install a filtration-Conditioner/Softener system between the water pump line and the water heater. That way the showers, sink, washers, fridge can benefit from it.

So I was just curious if anyone else out here has a well system and if they recommend either a filter-conditioner or filter-softener, as you cannot use both conditioner and softener at the same time, or so I have read.

The biggest DIY I've done is replace the toilet float and paint the whole house.

Have you tried one of the well water test kits? Most everyone I know that has a well has a softener over here at minimum except one guy I work with, he just has a conditioner and doesn't have hard water issues. Maybe my uncle doesn't have a conditioner and a softener, but he for sure has a softener and some other crazy filtration setup. I know he paid a lot of money for it to make his coffee taste normal. .

Every time my customer says something stupid and stops me from helping them out of the mess they made, I am going to add an extra hour to my time sheet.

No, I'm not, but I really want to make that a rule.
