Hi,
Have a second hand Toyota 86 2014. Had the clutch replaced. After the replacement, the reverse catch does not need to be pulled to put the car in reverse. My mechanic had a look but cant figure out how to re-engage it and feels like the swap out of the clutch should not have affected the lever.

Any tips I can pass on are appreciated

The shifter wasn't reassembled correctly. There is a plate with a notch in it that gates reverse. This plate is almost certainly missing or misaligned. Watch a video on a "short shifter install" and you'll see the plate.

From the repair manual. Pretty straight forward

Important to note, make sure when you adjust the gap that the top plate is truly parallel to the 1-2 shift direction, as the shifter will "ride" along this plate. The holes are slotted so it is easy for this to be misaligned.

If it is too tight at the bottom near 2nd gear position, it will be difficult to shift into 2nd. Vice versa on 1st gear.

Get everything in position and tighten them down slightly, then row through the gears and ensure shifts are smooth before final tightening.
