I drove my '73 VW Beetle from NY to Baltimore with a broken clutch cable once...toll booths made it interesting. If I did have to come to a complete stop, I just started it in 1st gear and away I went.

I drove with one foot out the window quite frequently on long hauls on the highway. Nothing untoward about it...just another position to use for a while to keep limber.

Yeah, I know. It's not a recommended practice when other cars or wildlife are around. The flipside is that skydiving, rock climbing, hang gliding, and motorcycle riding aren't the safest way to spend your free time either. Don't endanger others.... absolutely. Manage your own personal risk aversion thresholds? Also absolutely.
