Low Profile Jack Handle Set Screw Help

I purchased a Performance Tool 2 ton low profile jack that came without a handle set screw. There was a hole in the box and apparently they just throw the screw in the box or I was sold a used product. Neither the vendor nor the manufacturer would assist and the manual does not have a part number or dimension for the screw. I was willing to buy the screw from them if they had them and return shipping was over $100 - not worth sending it back.

Reaching out to see if anyone has this or similar model jack and could confirm if either of these screws would fit.

OK, well, it looks that a common bolt would suit the purpose.

Bubba suggests you pack up your jack, go to the hardware store, buy a few bolts that look to be the proper thread and diameter (the length won't much matter), try them till you find the proper one. Keep that one, take the others back into the store for a refund.

Screw some bolts into it till you find the right diameter and pitch. Chuck bolt in drill and turn against belt sander until desired shape is roughly reached. Finish with file.

Done

I appreciate Bubba's thought and I started going down the same path. If it were just friction I would say any household bolt would do. There is a hole at the end of the jack handle that aligns with the pin to stop the handle from pulling out of the holder.

I looked at the two listings closer and I believe the first one a safer bet. My thought is if the machined out pin is too long... add the washer. If not leave it out.

If you know the dimensions I can turn one in the lathe and send it to you.

I think Jeff Spicoli's dad had a better set of tools than I do.

I appreciate the offer. I have seen others in the forum with the same jack in 3.5 ton in their pictures except it is black. I'll go back through the what did you do thread and see if I can find an example.

you could always use the hardware bolt method to identify the size and then buy the corresponding set screw from ebay, amazon, etc.

If you lug the jack into a small independent hardware store there is a fair chance the owner/staff will help identify the size and thread just to build a positive relationship in hopes of future sales.
Alternatively, lug the jack into a big box store, identify the size and then leave without purchasing since they don't have the screw design you require.

We have a local ACE that is very helpful in these situations and they would probably make me the bolt if I asked. I think they even have a random used bin that's free if I want to dig through it.

this is exactly what i've done, except with a dremel.

i had some audio equipment racks with acrylic panel covers that preferred to swing open naturally. i made the same style bolt/nipple with a thumbscrew so that there was essentially a mechanical detent point to allow for access and still keep them closed before fully securing the covers over the equipment faces.

I finally got the screw I needed for a reasonable price. It's an M12 x 1.75mm x 20mm. Now I can install my axle back.
