Hah, I know Rick, he used to take care of my MFI 73 911S back in the day. Great shop, always saw neat stuff in there too (like a 908)

Thanks everyone, especially @Racecomp Engineering for the insight (nice 951 by the way!)

Well, I'd say that about does it.
Either this year or next, I'll be selling the BRZ and the RS6 and getting a 911 and something decent for a daily like an older A4 or a Golf TDI. If I could afford to keep the RS6 and get a 911 (or better yet, all 3), that would be splendid, but it's not in the cards.

A 996 Turbo would be excellent; I just took a look at a 2002 the other day and found I could live with the blob headlights and less exciting interior in the name of 415hp and 415lb/ft and 190mph top speed If I can't find a clean one at a good price, then a 997.1 Carrera S 2wd will also do nicely, after paying for an IMS retrofit of course.

The only question is: who is going to take care of my Prodrive wheels when I'm gone?

The IMS bearing on most* of the 997s requires a full engine teardown to access. The M96* engines have the serviceable bearing, the M97s do not. Failure rate is between 5-10%. For what it's worth, I haven't heard of anything as horrifying from the 9a1 engines yet.

If you can't get a Turbo, I would hold out for the 997.2 if I was you. The 9A1 has direct injection and a base Carrera almost makes as much power as a 997.1 Carrera S. Not to mention the updated interior and gizmos.

When I was looking at 911s and Caymans, I came to realize quickly that a Porsche is a car you don't sell yourself short on. You get the best one you can... at this point in my life, I wasn't able to do that for myself, but I will be able to soon.

Agreed, though in my research I found the failure rate substantially lower on the M97, 2006+. That said, I would only get a 997.2 with the 9A1 if it were my dollars spent.

Have Porsche owners reported issues with carbon buildup with direct injected engines? Not like it's impossible to fix, just costly and irritating. It's one thing that's kept me from looking at a newer Audi like the S6 or S8 with the 5.2 V10.

Yeah, from what I've read the non-serviceable bearing has a significantly higher capacity than the Single Row bearing, comparable to the capacity of the Dual Row bearing used in the first couple model years.

Not that I've seen actually. Seems the injectors spray fuel onto the intake valve. Looks like Cylinders 5&6 like to seize though.

Edit: Scratch that, Jake Raby's saying it's common to see.

If you are from the US modding an FRS-BRZ can be a good option, but from europe... well it's the worse choice ever.

Go for a cayman - 911 much better option, unless you happy to drive a stock brz.

Yeah but in Europe you can score a much better deal on a used 911/Cayman than here. And you have more on the market I would guess. I have been watching the used Cayman market in my neck of the woods and they are few and far between for under $30K within 100 miles.
