Well, we all know why some guys like the manual transmission so much.
Need that satisfying feeling of a stick in the hand at all times.

One does not follow the other, at least not for everyone.

I have both and experience exactly the opposite. Movement is good for arthritis. I have to be careful when driving my automatic Jeep because my left knee will get inflamed, stiffen up and sometimes swell. That doesn't happen in the BRZ because I'm using it more.

Anybody driving MT for a long time (in my case 47 years) you no longer put any more thought into shifting than you do steering or braking. It is not more "engaging" when you don't even realize you are doing it.
Yes it is. 36 years here driving manual, so it's not new to me, and I'm not hooning around town. I've been seriously considering converting the Eagle over to manual to make it more engaging during my 30 second 0-60 pulls.

The last local TV station that was stupid enough to employ me had robotic cameras. The camera operator would program the newscast into them, then they would autonomously perform all the dollies, zooms, pans, etc. with a single operator to tweak the pictures from all four cameras. When they were done, they would all find their little home position cross mark on the floor in a neat line and go to sleep.

One day, for no reason anybody could figure out, one of the sleeping cameras woke up, looked around, and attacked the camera behind it, shattering the mirrors in both of their teleprompters and damaging the lens rail supporting one of them. Then it looked down and, for lack of a better description, sagged as if sad at what had happened.

I was in the studio waiting for a reporter when it happened and witnessed the whole thing. The operator was nowhere near it. That night they had to run the newscast manually with cameras from the old studio. I think the engineers ended up completely reinstalling the controller software to get that camera to stop misbehaving.

I want to make another comment about this:

On the contrary, it's more engaging because I don't realize I'm doing it.

When I drive an automatic, I feel like there's a layer of technology between me and the road. I feel like I'm operating a dumb piece of machinery. Turn this wheel. Push this pedal. Monitor that readout. It feels like I'm in service to the machinery. ZZZZzzzz....

When I drive a manual, especially a manual sports car, that layer of technology starts to melt away. I am engaged with the machinery in the sense that it feels more like an extension of my body. I'm not serving the machinery and it's not serving me, because there's not much separation between us.

Maybe you don't get that same sense of engagement, and that's fine. But for some of us, the separation of driving automatics is more exhausting and tedious.

Meh we have been through this a dozen times. It has become exhausting and tedious so not doing it again.

I drive MT, AT and DCT interchangeably these days. I left foot brake often in non-MT so there is no need to keep the left foot somewhere. The AT is full auto without manual override. I can keep track of speed/rpm just fine so I never drive the DCT in auto. The thing doesn't have paddle shifters though. So if I were the whiny type, I would probably jump on forums and complain about sequential vs H-pattern causing disorientation, accidents etc. But that isn't the case. The mental shift among transmission types is quite automatic actually.
