Had a cute student for English, first one in a while. Caught a heck of a lot of down-blouse, too. Not sure if she was doing it on purpose or I'm just a perv (but I do try to keep it professional, and she's 28 in case anyone misinterprets 'student').

Today was the 3rd time, ever in my life, that I attempted to ride my bicycle to work, an 8km trip.

I had gotten up early, packed a spare shirt and socks, drank my random-berry, banana, protein smoothy and was ready to hit the road.

And then the rain came. A quick google revealed more intense rain later in the day and maybe even some thunderstorms.

It's like Mother Nature is conspiring against me living healthy.

Good thing my other mode of transport is the FRS. Zoom Zoom.

Sometimes it just ends up that way, really is hard not to look at that stuff.

Halfway considered being a professor in CS....but the only time I'd ever get cute students is if I taught the intro courses....which I'm not sure would be super worth it as 95% of the kids in there just want an easy in and out. That...and I like really in depth CS shit that a low level course doesn't cover.

Though, I've ended up training the new hires here were I work....and I find I have a ton of information to give them. Makes me wonder if I shouldn't reconsider as I really enjoy it (when it's clear they want to learn).

My mind is also a bit blown by how little some cs grads know about things such as time complexity for functions, data structures, all types of algorithms, etc. I don't expect them to have instruction level knowledge like you'd have from working with C or something....but at least know why you'd rather not iterate through a collection 10 times when you don't have to.

and then there's the whole deferred execution of certain things......ah...fun stuff.

You'd be surprised at how little they cover in CS courses now-a-days. Hell, 10 years ago, the curriculum still relied mostly on ANSI C. LOL. I won't hire a developer fresh out of college unless it's to get cheap labor :-/. Nothing against college grads, but the market (at least here) demands more experience than an expensive piece of paper.

Hell, last week I saw 4 resumes listing degrees, and none of them knew how to employ a simple recursive procedure correctly. Oy...

I was going to pitch in the recursive stuff and @2forme beat me to it. I wonder how many would know the difference of DFS and BFS...

Haha, we didn't even get to that. In our test example it's a simple tree. If they manage to iterate through the tree to our satisfaction, THEN we introduce the performance and environment limitations to see how they react.

I should mention these degrees were from decently reputable schools, as well. Not MIT or anything, but yea...

hah, trees. great stuff...really common sense for the most part. and yeah, I haven't even thought to ask any of our new hires that stuff when they're in on interview. I don't even know what to think about asking any of them something recursive either.....

The school I got out of was pretty small and focused on a ton of the core information. Didn't hurt that my DS professor was german and the information systems / parallel professor was chinese. Very detail oriented people, and taught me a ton.

Granted, a lot of people got caught up on their mastery of english and chose not to pay them any attention.

I graduated about 2 and a half years ago though, and the program is slowly changing more and more....I just hope they don't go too soft. CS should be 'hard', and should have a lot of information.....not how to be a code monkey.
