i did see a 40ish pound cub on foothills. probably orphaned. bears can be a daily thing as i have three piles in my yard right now.

from the last abode... they're ok in the woods if you keep a pace. mother bears can be whack but they let you know.

Oh man right in your yard! I am totally comfortable with all southeastern US wildlife. Except the black bear haha. I give those guys a wide berth and I wouldn’t even live in a place with brown bears. I’d be intimidated to drive the Dragon at speed after dark. Be just my luck I’d roll one of those suckers right through my windshield and he’d eat my face off. I have caught some hellacious timber rattlesnakes not far from there though.

You get outside of most any major city in Canada and you'll find Moose, Elk and all types of Bears. The further out the bigger they are.
Here's a short video of a friend of mine riding a back road in southern BC.

He's got lots of bear videos and stills.

I run into bears all the time. I have been wandering my mountains for 35 years and they are very common on Vancouver Island. I see mothers with cubs every year, and really if you know what you are doing they are not a problem.

I have been charged by a big male I called Thomas, but they are ritual charges almost all the time. Never run! They can do 40 mph through the bush.

I wonder what Thomas calls you? "Breakfast", "Brunch", "Lunch", or "Supper"?

I knew him for years, that's why I named him. You are only prey if you fail the ritual charge test.

If he were to run Thomas would call him "not so Fast Food".

I have watched bears doing almost 40 mph through the bush.

My daughter who lived with the west coast bears near Tofino for 2 years, showed me the holes they make, when she was about 12. You spook one then run up to where it went into the bush, and if you are quick you can see the hole it made in the bush, closing up behind it.

Mountain lions scare tomorrow's shit out of me. I knew several folks who came out on the short end of a meeting with one of those. Emphasis on the past tense - knew. For the big kitties, you are prey - full stop. You may not see them, but they see you.
