That is other than the usual sway bar tweaking / VSC loosening / stuff you likely won't notice unless you get paid for lap times, of course. Well, and the dash that's one long piece instead of having the stupid split.

I think OP has already made up their mind, but call me biased, I'm partial to my '16 . Having a '16 also means I get to be all insufferable about not having buttons on the steering wheel. Not having them is really just icing on the cake when you think about it.

It's what Tada-san envisioned when he desiiiiigned the car.

I don't care what people say, my early production April 2012 made car has been trouble free. And I like the "T" pattern on the dash which is unique to the first model year. Only things I didnt like were the whip antenna (replaced) and the absence of the knee pads (added, in actual leather). My car is simpler with manual HVAC controls and has a more analog feel inside which I prefer for this car, it adds to the connectedness I feel when driving it.

Faults this car exhibited were really minimal; condensation in taillights (fixed 2x but I replaced with Valentis anyway), and the cam plate drip which I resealed myself at a cost of $8.

Overall they are decently reliable cars in every model year, but they are not Toyota Corollas partially by virtue that they are low slung sports cars. I could go on and on but take it for what it's worth. I'd approach a preowned purchase the same if it was a Miata, 370Z, etc. in terms of repairs, modifications, signs of abuse etc. The forum WILL NOT provide a statistical cross section of all vehicles reliability record and people here tend to overblow things out of proportion.
And, there's probably a heck of a lot less preowned 86's in the Philippines than in the urban parts of the US.

I do not regret passing on the valve spring recall. The dealer convinced me when they informed me they'd charge at least $500 for the fact that I have an HKS supercharger. I guess the few minutes to drain the traction fluid and 30 additional seconds putting the belt back on the revised pulley is worth that to them. In reality removal of stock intake and sound tube reduces time required for this job but they sling shit against the wall anyway. Lucky they didnt know I have a Perrin LWCP, that would have added another $200 for the tech having to look at anodized red.

I would be less concerned about the valve spring thing and more concerned about the number of spun main bearings. I haven't done a ton of research on that because I have a 2017, but wasn't there some manufacturing issues with clogged oil passages or something in some of the early models? Or was that happening when they replaced the recalled springs?

Little of A little of B.
More so with B during the early stages of the recall.

Either way, it's enough that I would avoid a 2013 unless you get such a great deal you have money left over for a new engine.

If you read further up you will see pallen ask questions indicating he really knows very little about these cars or at least the information he has been able to extract has been deeply skewed by opinion bias.

Suffice it to say, or should I say, say again, buy the newest, lowest mileage best condition car that fits your budget and taste.

This is really the only answer worth reading in this thread. Yes, it's been posted by several people.

I do suggest 14+ usually just to avoid the conversation on the recall. Of course my 2013 FRS I bought salvage because toyota techs destroyed the engine with the recall but it's still not something that steers me away from a 13 personally.

I've had my 2013 for just over 5 years now,and after 70k mile on the odometer,I haven't had a single issue besides a leaky taillight.I haven't had the valve springs recall done, and won't even consider it until I get a new clutch put in,and even then,I probably won't do it.

My local dealer, where I bought my car, took about two weeks to do the brakes properly,so why would I ever trust them to crack open the motor of my car?!

I lost 2 motors. One at the track. One popped the CEL on a 2500rpm rev in neutral. There are plenty of others that lost motors in the 2013s long before the valve spring recall. I expect with 70k miles, if yours was bad it would have faired long ago. They were failing for the same reason they fall after the valve spring recall: extra sealant blocking oil

Don't know what you're talking about. I'm first off the line almost every time. Everyone else is worried about spilling their drink, or is disturbed that the green light is interrupting their text conversation
