My 4runner is fun to drive but for completely different reasons and that's fine, just don't lie to yourself and others and claim that there is no difference.
I remember one night clearly in the last MT I owned. I was out of town and leaving a big arena concert. Traffic control pushed me out on a street that was stupid busy and I followed another car trying to save some time. This next street made a pretty nice incline and on this inclined road was a four way stop sign. I had to be behind at least 50 cars at this stop sign and no where to go. Nothing about that can be described with enjoy and driving in the same sentence lol.

Not sure about the “no who can drive manual”, but was it meant to be inflammatory to anyone who chose an AT? I ask because I do enjoy driving my 86 and it is an AT. These threads make me smile…you know the ones where someone thinks they know what everyone should like ;-). I think someone like that should buy a higher production model. That way they could educate so many more drivers.

These threads are always interesting.

If people knew the actual reason most of their cars were built with autos has nothing to do with being faster or more enjoyable but because of noise and emissions regulations.

I'll probably never understand why someone would want a small low powered noisy sports car and then option it with a meh auto. Plenty of better options if you don't really want the full experience. GTI, EN, IS300,Any of the pony cars.

All you need to understand is some use it for a daily commute with traffic and the auto is so much better in traffic. And still fun in the twisties. It’s a compromise for sure, but so worth it.

You know I was gonna contribute to this thread but then I saw the post dates and thought that there's nothing that hasn't already been said that says how stupid and tired of an argument it is for people to find 18000 ways to shit on an AT, almost universally in bad faith and or misleading or just flat out incorrect.

And it shouldn't... it becomes muscle memory and reflex. I have a harder time driving other cars because I have to make a conscious effort to not stomp on the left pedal with my left foot. Did it one time at a toll booth and was pulled over. Cop laughed at me when I told him what I did.

How would an automatic ever know that you want to stay in gear longer or when to shift more aggressively vs... whatever it's programmed to do? I doubt an automatic is ever programmed to only shift at before redline or even at whatever optimum torque-rpm it is.

That is exactly what any tranny with a sports mode does. And it does it far faster than push a lever can.

Yet still, it never gets old.

Yea theoretically, but how does it handle unexpected conditions like road changes such as inclines where all of a sudden the angle sucks up all your torque or you're drag racing someone and you wanted the RPM to go to redline but instead the AT switches to 2nd gear at 3500 RPM?

In sport mode it continues to hold lower gear ..and even more depending on your driving habit.

You also have paddles and have complete control.

How does a manual handle unexpected changes? You change the gear. It's the same in an automatic. Any modern automatic can handle these situations, likely better than a human. What was the last automatic you drove? A truck from the 90s?
