Excellent. Can't wait to see the results. One of these days, I'll get my front bumper cover repainted. It's completely peppered.

I have a pretty good guess.

Yea, well besides that. I usually remember those scraps...this one I don't. It just "showed up" one day.

Looks like it's going to be at least another week before I get the car back. As of the end of last week, it was still in the body shop, and wasn't scheduled to go to paint until (maybe) the end of this week.

So, after turning in the Charger rental a week ago since I was going to be off work and out of town for a week, I got a new rental car.

At first they tried to give me a Camry with a windshield ding about the size of the bottom of a can of soup right in the sight line of the driver. They weren't happy when I balked at that, but gave me another choice.

Ultimately, I ended up with a Kia Optima. Talk about a "generic rental car". It does at least have Android Auto (wired), and has lane assist.

Basically with cruise control and lane assist turned on the car can drive itself for short periods of time. You can take your hands off the wheel for about 60 seconds before it prompts you to put them back on. Having never driven a car with that level of lane assist, I have to say its a very odd experience.

The lane assist works OK, but it's unpredictable. On occasion it works great, on other occasions it doesn't work at all. I also feel like I'm fighting with it at times. Basically, I turn it off if I'm not playing with it.

That sounds actually dangerous.

My wife is at about 10 seconds, so worthless feature.

It's not really intended for hands-off driving but yea.

I keep my hands basically "O'ed" around the wheel just not touching it so I'm ready to correct.

What sometimes seem to happen is just as the car drifts towards the shoulder and should edge back to the middle, the system disengages because it's lost track of the side of the road. It happens most often when the shoulder strip changes (say from solid to stripes). I will say it didn't happen often, but it did happen.

Tuesday update. Car will be at least another two weeks because the Collision Center (a major chain, not Bubba's Shade Tree Painting and Boiled Peanuts) is down to one painter after two quit in the last two weeks. More great resignation stuff (or more likely a job market favoring job swapping right now)

On second thought I should have used Bubba's. Live and learn.

Hmmm... For my hip replacement I'll choose the hospital with a high turnover of orthopedic surgeons.

Sorry about the predicament. Fingers crossed for you. It'll be ok.

Sort to hear about the delays.

On the rental car from, my son’s new outback has lane assist among other “convenience” features. I tried a couple of times driving down from Seattle. Can’t say I’d want it on a car I owned. Fortunately, it’s default mode is off.

In the KIA, it retains all those settings between starts, so if you turn off Lane Assist, pick a specific driving mode (Comfort, ECON, Sport) and such, the car is still set up that way the next time you start it.

The only exception may be traction control, but I haven't tried it to see. I might do that tonight.

UPdated on the FRS, it's finally in paint. Could be ready as soon as the 11th but I should now on Tuesday.

She's back and (at least looks) better than before...

Got a surprise call that the car was ready for pickup today. Stopped at the shop and traded my rental for Olivia. She's now safe and sound at home.

A couple of photos of the repair area and the final bill are below. Contact was the left rear taillight. The car was repainted from the rear of the door back. They also fixed a scrub mark on the front bumper cover and realigned it for me, no extra cost. Unfortunately, they did not touch up the hood, too many spots.

Besides the obvious parts, also got new muffler and pipes and tool tray.

I also got a new battery. They think there was a short in the taillight that kept draining it, then it wouldn't hold a charge. Bonus points.

Anyway, looks pretty good for a 197K mile car, I think.

As a first weekend back drive, I'm driving her to the Atlanta Auto Show tomorrow. I only go once every few years as the show is more minor league than you think it would be for being in Atlanta, but I have free tickets as a Chevy "Truck Legend" owner.
