Congrats
The new transmission will make a world of difference. I think the problem they are having is that the original transmission is flawed and they know it. But they don't have enough new improved transmissions to take up the slack for replacements. So if you have grinding problems THAT IS NOT NORMAL. Demand a new transmission and eventually you will get it but understand you may have to wait in line. |

Huh? You seem certain that a new box will have no improvements, and he will have another failure in 20k miles. How does that explain all the members with more than 20k miles that have never had a problem? Worthless troll post is worthless.

Glad to hear everything is working again. I wonder if they are replacing the boxes with new factory units, or "refurbished" units with some new parts (hopefully updated parts). If that's the case, I hope all wear items get replaced, gears, synchros, forks, etc.

I just had my transmission replaced by Subaru under warranty for grinding. The dealer put Motul 300 (I provided) in it with the blessing of the Subaru engineers. Lexus has a TSB with a Caution stating that fluid other than GL-5 WILL cause transmission damage. The OEM fluid in the 86 transmission is GL-3. This is most likely the source of our issues. This should be a TSB for fluid replacement. Subaru Extra-S is an excellent GL-5 fluid that most dealers refuse to stock because it isn't a reimbursable item in their supply system so it carries some inventory risk. However, 1 barrel will only service 4 cars, so the risk is minimal. It is also the recommended fluid for WRX and STi cars. I'm providing this info so we can all kick, scream, and beg until all Subaru dealers start carrying this fluid!
