Sometimes advertising is targeted to the demographic that they are failing at. Probably a complete surprise that for so many this is a mid-life crisis car and that might not be a sustainable business model.

Tada was banking on younger buyers who would add turbos and mod to their liking, but these days the younger crowd doesn't have the time or resources to mod. I think these cars would be much more popular with a form of the FA20T. They could probably pull it off with the budget of these silly adds

While Tada might have been banking on younger buyers, I don't think Subaru was by taking on a BRZ. Subies have almost always been for midrange enthusiasts -- the kind of people that are swapping catbacks and headers, but not necessarily fancy body kits and greddy turbos. I'd believe Tada took that into some consideration.

I'm not sure either side has been perfectly successful -- but I have a hard time finding people who have driven the car and don't love it for what it is. The problem is whether or not an FA20T would make "what it is" better enough.

Subaru went from a rather obscure little known automaker in the 90's to king of the hill for the young crowd in the 2000's by taking risks. The Prius was a risk for the affluent crowd, so Toyota has it in them, a tuned for sports car FA20T is relatively low risk and low cost.

I was in a bar with some friends when I first saw the "epic" commercial. I pointed to the tv and said "hey it's my car!", then all the explosions went off and I felt slightly embarrassed by such a corny ad.
