I need an engine

I've had issues since the recall work last year and they're finally over. Unfortunately it's left me needing a new (used) motor Does anyone know of a 13-16 motor, preferably complete because it saves a lot of labor hours, available somewhat locally? I'd actually prefer to go with 14-16 to stay away from early motor issues. I'm on the broke side due to covid induced lack of work so cheap is good. Maybe someone pulled a motor for a track build or swap and needs theirs out of the way or maybe you know of a rear end wreck at a local yard.

Check https://www.car-part.com/

It lets you search through a ton of salvage yard inventories for the specific part you filter for. You can then contact a local salvage yard that has what you're looking for.

I go there every day. I was hoping for someone local that knows of something I could come pick up or that knows of something that was pulled for a purpose and knows that it runs well. I really don't want to drop $3-5 k and find out it's fucked up.

If you don't want it to have a chance of being bad, why are you buying used?

Let me rephrase that, I'm hoping to find one from a rear end wreck that has a better chance of running well than one from a front or side impact. Almost everything I've seen is from a car with significant front end damage or took a side/offset hit. If somebody knows of a motor that was pulled for a swap or to replace with a track motor that would be the best option. Buying used because new is crazy expensive, more than the car is worth, gotta find a balance somewhere but I have a general distrust for junkyards because so many are shady.

Are you on Facebook? There’s a number of salvage businesses now who buy wrecked 86s from auction and part out via the 86 marketplace groups.

FWIW, I had a positive experience getting a motor via car-parts.com. It took some time searching/calling up yards but ideally you should be able to find a same MY/transmission with a warranty, been tested/leak down, no cracks, offers a core refund and covers the shipping of picking up the core. Good luck.

I've been following that for a few weeks now, mostly just the 86ONE group not national, and checking on some of what's been posted. There have been a few out west on car-parts and copart that seemed ok but cross country shipping on a complete engine gets pricey.

edit: I just heard from a friend in NJ that owns a performance shop and he might have a line on something worth buying. I"ll find out on Tuesday and update. Gonna be a trick getting it from my place to Montclair, anyone have a flatbed they don't need for a few hours?

Any time you buy a used engine you have no idea what you're getting. It can be a very expensive lesson.

Get a refurb, 3200$ shipped. Probably safest bet for it not having issues compared to buying used at similar price point.

That's what I've been looking for. Thank you! This may just have saved the day. Now I wonder if there's one on the east coast just to save some $$ on shipping the core back.

Boy this is turning into quite a project. The refurb long block idea is great but as I learn more some of the parts that I would need to use from my current engine probably shouldn't be used because of potential damage from metal in the oil from the spun bearing. This brings the cost up to a level I may not be able to meet. That brings me back to a used motor and I'm not finding one that I can verify the history on. Bottom line is it looks like $5k is what it's going to take to solve this problem and I really need to be under 4. Ideas other than give up and sell it?

Pull off whatever you may need to reuse and get it cleaned and inspected.

Actually go into a couple of wreckers in person. They have more resources than what is publicly available but can shy away from phone or email enquires. Auto wrecker employees are usually a special breed all of their own and you will often get far more help in person.

I'm kind of surprised at how few engines for our cars are available, there are some on the west coast but very few otherwise. I think I found one in PA, has anyone had any experience with PMP Auto? They appear to be a Subaru specialist. They don't show one available on their website but I had an email communication with them and they do have one with a 5/14 build date that they said is tested and runs with about 60k on it. https://www.pmpautogroup.com/Default.asp
