instead of me making a new thread LIKE A n00b... and all of the ft86club gurus are on this thread.

Pre-painted parts vs taking it down to get match to your paint. Which do you prefer and why?

Prepainted always has a greater risk of mismatch. Of course so can colour match but the difference may be less. All depend on how anal you are about the exact tone, hue, etc. There are some guys that will complain because if they squint just right on a Tuesday at 12:47 they just might, maybe, possibly, be able to see a difference or there are others that if you can't tell from 20 feet away then it is close enough.

I am also guessing pre-painted parts from certain sites are considered more "spot on" than others?

basically what I am asking is if I buy pre-painted TRD parts from Japanparts.com how close will their white be to my frs's white.

It's pretty close... but if you're really picky, I'll would recommend getting it painted by locally.

I tested 10 different phone apps against my calibration unit (I have all the real toys to play with) and found a massive difference in most. Some were reading as high as 10db over the known actual rate. There were only two that came within 1db and only one of those had data logging that was of any value.
So, in summary, can we be precise enough to send a ship to Mars? No.
Can we get a reasonably close approximation for comparative purposes? Yes.
Mind sharing the two phone apps that came close to the real tools? Just curious is all.

It's not just the app - it's also your hardware.

Yes hardware plays a part as well. I will include the whole info in my write up. Some of those apps were just horrible though.

Remember the Zik/GTX/Cedars pics with the TRD kit put on by the dealer? The difference was notable even in the poor quality pics. Now that was white so it is the hardest to match and there was a colour change between the 14s and 15s so consider it a worst case scenario.
