Insuring aftermarket stuff?

hey guys so my car got tboned a few days ago. The adjuster has finally called me the only aftermarket thing damaged was 1 c west side skirt. However the car has probably another 15,000 in parts on it. The adjuster was recommending I insure the car for aftermarket parts just incase of a future incident Has anyone done this yet and is it cost effective? I'm not sure how much it would add to the bill. Not sure if he was just trying to get an upsell or actually cared about my car. Haha.

If anyone has any input let me know. Its travelers insurance btw.

if my insurance company knew what I have turned my car into they would refuse to insure me lol!! Honestly I am a little interested in how this works too.

What is the value of your goods to you? Not just dollars, but peace of mind?

Don't ever base cost of insurance and measure that against the value of the goods. Insurance is meant to replace what can be damaged or broken and put it back to where it was before the incident.

As for the upsell part, it is an upsell. It's also their way of saying "next time we won't cover your stuff if we know you have mods on the car"

Depends on the company, policy and all those other variables but it should not increase your policy by much. My company said that for me it would be around $10 a year per $1,000 in parts. That is really peanuts for peace of mind.

i'm pretty sure it depends on the rates your provider can offer but if anyone has a lot of money invested in their cars it is worth it. I don't have body mods, expensive wheels, or turbo/sc kit so i wouldn't personally do it.

Of course, always depends on your situation and that's a given. Never hurts to get a quote, just imo if you can afford to have thousands cashed out on this car then a few bucks a month for peace of mind should be considered.

Have to take theft into account too. If your car suddenly disappeared, you wouldn't even have a chance to remove the mods.

I'm not a huge fan of adjusters in general, having dealt with a couple that were not entirely forthright in how they handled claims. However, I doubt an adjuster sees any bonus or commission from selling you additional coverage, so he would have no incentive to upsell you. That's the agent's or customer service rep's job. He probably just saw a near miss on your aftermarket parts and was trying to be helpful.
