extended warranty?

so i just bought my BRZ today, and the dealer offered me an extended warranty. this extends the bumper to bumper coverage from 3/36K to 7/70K. they are asking $1250 for this.

i declined, but have until thursday to change my mind. would anyone jump on this?

I opted for the 6yr/80,000, since I drive a lot, and typically own my cars for ~10 years. I also don't plan to do any major mods to the car, plus it's a first year car full of electronics.

The dealer can come down on that price too, they sold the plan to me for $1k.

*edit* I'm assuming they offered you the Subaru extended warrenty, and not a third party warrenty? The one I purchased was directly from Subaru.

This is only the second extended warrenty I've ever purchased, generally I'm in with the "put the money in the bank" crowd. I spent a month looking this one over, and reading all the fine print, before I decided to go ahead. I suggest doing the same, read it all, think about it, then read it again. Think about which plan you're most likely to use up too. Would you use the years, or the mileage first?

Sorry, I'm from the school that considers extended warranties as snake oil. I have never bought an extended warranty on any thing I've purchased in my life and have yet to regret it even once.

If a part of your car makes it thru infancy there's a good chance there's nothing wrong with that part. Your three year factory warranty covers more than the period of infancy. If you maintain/treat your car properly there's no reason that a part that survived the three year warranty would become a problem. On the other hand, if you drive it like you stole it you might consider buying it.

Not recommended. It is a very high cost for the benefit offered.

Take care of your car at least to the level of the manufacturers warranty requirements and you will find that in three years the $1250 was a waste of money. Put it in a savings account (or something else) and let it gain interest. It will take care of any problems you may have keeping in mind that it doesn't take effect for at least three years after purchase. Even then, if you STUDY the contract and its small print you will find that it covers very specific items and not what you might expect it to cover. Also, historically, many these 'insurance' companies are of questionable financial stability. (a potential for going OOB Out Of Business).

If you have any questions on my advice, ask the salesperson for a copy of the contract and take it home with you and READ it. If he/she balks, RUN, RUN, RUN out of there.

My opinion, and the opinion of any good financial adviser of personal financial issues even those extra warranties of extended service contracts on other items one purchases such as audio equipment, TVs and kitchen appliances is not worth the money.

Agreed, I'd steer clear

The F&I guy spent more time trying to sell me the extended warranty than the car. Those things reek of "pure profit" for the dealership.

Plus his extended warranty came with a $100 deductible (seriously bro?)

The mood of the room changed dramatically after I gave the F&I guy a stern "I do not want this warranty. Move on."

What an @$$%o!e

don't take it.

I bought it for my 2008 2.5GT legacy and haven't used it at all. I just sold it last week.

Waste of money. I don't like to keep cars for too long though. so maybe that's why.

This was the first car I purchased an extended warranty on for two reasons:

1. First year run production of this car so no guarantees how they will behave for 3 years

2. My last car (07 gti) decided it wanted to crap out on the ac in 55k miles....it would have been over 2k to fix which led me to my fr-s

6 out of my last 7 cars I never got extended warranty......just my .02

Haha, I had a similar experience. I already had a check in hand to buy the car and had been waiting over an hour and a half. So, wasn't in too good a mood when I made it to financing. Right after the first word left his mouth, I cut him off and told him "I'm not buying anything your selling, take my money and bring my car around."

With as addictive as modifying this car is, don't waist your money. Buy a nice exhaust instead.

The extended warranty is basically insurance... could be a good investment or a waste of money, depending on your luck.

If you decide to go for it, you can typically purchase it anytime before the 3/36k factory warranty expires. Sounds like the dealer is trying to secure some extra profit by giving you a Thursday deadline. I'd tell them hell no.

i work for an extended warranty company, most contracts are not really an extension of the bumper to bumper coverage. Even though he may say it is. I would request a copy of the contract agreement to see what is covered.

Hell NO! $1250 for extended warranty is way too much. When i got my car, they chucked in free options like reverse sensors, front sensors, reverse camera and 6 years unlimited premium warranty that covers like blown head gaskets and such. I pushed them for free paint protection, but that was going too far......

I considered it, but I bought them before but never used them. Seemed like a waste. I bought a used Audi once from a dealer and got a very good extended warranty offer, so I bought it and it did pay off. But I have never bought a brand new car with extended warranty and got use out of it. A 2006 Tribeca (bought as a hurricane evactuation car in South Carolina never had more than a 6.00 part replaced on it in 7 years. A 2008 Mini Cooper that never had anything break out of warranty (and only a door lock while in waranty) and I just sold it last week.

Yes this is a new model, but I bought the Tribeca in Sept 2005 when it was just put on the dealers lot in that month. So just because it is a new model does not mean it will have lingering problems outside the warranty. In fact because it is a Subaru, "Consumer Reports" would tell you that is very unlikely to have lingering quality problems.

At $1,000.00 dollars though it is not a bad risk management move to take if your would rather pay some up front and not ever have chance to have to pay possibly more later
