The wood wouldn't explode, but it might split. If you can get a hunk of 2x4, it should be fine. If it's thinner though, like a piece of 1x4, or part of a piece of plywood, I'd layer a couple of pieces and rotate the layers so that the grain of one is perpendicular to the grain of the other.
