The ducts that seem to be behind all the static-y snow whatnot , could that just be where the radiator or even intercooler ends? On the left and right sides of grille, they look like they turn into the faux grille having the pattern of the grille but solid for support/strength, therfore maybe making it appear like ducts? Could be matrix-ing of our brains, seeing a pattern/image/form into the most logical choice because the information we're absorbing visually can't be translated yadayada..
The apparent ducts are in a weird location assuming they don't route to areas that would benefit, but seems like thay would waste engine bay space, and kinda far for brake cooling, unless once again, the ducts are routed or angled.

Well at least on my monitor, I can clearly see an opening and a darker area outside of the condenser/radiator that appears to be ducts. And yes, on the outer edges, it turns back into the faux grill. And it's not just that picture I noticed it in, but all the pictures and videos of the front grill. So my guess is that it is either for cooling the brakes, cooling some extra power device, or for better aerodynamics (less drag/lift). Normally when they design extra ducting for aerodynamic purposes, they will add an opening on top or on the sides of the engine bay for the air to better escape, which I do not see.

So who knows, hopefully we'll find out at the Tokyo Motor Show in a month.

I would say it's just the same radiator, in a way bigger "mouth", that simple. And as RallybluBrz, the weather/picture quality doesn't help.

In fact, look at this picture of mine and take the license plate as a reference to compare the size of the radiator and the "darker" empty spaces you call ducts with those on the mule

I hate it. Been following this car since they even thought about making it back in 2007.... Still haven't bought it.
Ah, those were the days... So much anticipation, so much google translate. When the production model was unveiled it was quite underwhelming. However, with all affordable cars, the concepts are a pipe dream and nothing more. Real life practicalities, like a usable trunk, ground clearance, safety regulations, and manufacturing costs numbed the looks. I finally bought one for the driving dynamics. The fact that it looks better than a Corolla is just icing.

Ahh, good call. For some reason I never noticed those before. Maybe that is all it is after all. Oh well...

BTW, super hot GT86! That's exactly what I've wanted mine to look like.

Nice picture. Just one question...how the hell did you get the door open far enough to get out to take it?

Toyota GT 86 facelift to have engine and suspension tweaks

Toyota GT 86 facelift to have engine and suspension tweaks

Toyota GT 86 Chief Engineer Tetsuya Tada has revealed some new details about the facelifted model that is currently under development.

In an interview with Motoring, Tada said the updates will cover "everything" including the body, engine and suspension. Tada went on to reveal the company will offer a new variant with a carbon fiber roof.

While Tada mentioned engine tweaks, he once again downplayed the possibility of a turbocharged variant. As he explained, "The WRX turbo is not a good solution for future fuel consumption and CO2 [emissions]." He also stated turbocharged engines don't sound or rev right for a sports car. Despite this, he seemed open to the possibility of using an e-turbo engine in the future.

Unfortunately, the updates could come at a cost as the facelifted model is expected to be more expensive than its predecessor. However, this isn't too surprising as the company is reportedly a new entry-level sports car which previewed by the S-FR concept.
