Summer preformance VS All season performance

Hey I am wondering what you guys opinions are on this. I am planing to get new wheels and debating on whether or not to get some all season performance tires, or some summer tires. I don't have much experience with summer tires, but we get some snow here sometimes. I have another car with all season tires. SOOOO this is where you guys come in. I was hoping to do some autocross and some track days this summer. Just want the most bang for my buck that I can still drive my baby year round. Thanks in advance!

If you live in a place where it doesn't snow then summers all the way :-)

Otherwise, go by these rules:
Summer tires: best in dry pavement
Winter tires: best in snow
All Seasons: so so in both

Don't do all seasons if you don't mind changing tires. More fun vs more convenience

There are some really good all seasons, continental dws, nitto motivo, pilot sport as come to mind but they won't have the grip of true summer tires. All season is a compromise if you are getting new wheels put summer tires on them and throw some winter tires on your stock wheels.

Thanks that isn't a bad idea. I may do winter tires on my stock as a safety. :happy0180:

How will the better all season compare to the oem tires? I'd like a little more traction, but not much more, as well as better wet and cold dry traction. The tread life on the all seasons is apealing too. We have my truck and her legacy, so the BRZ doesn't see snow.

For dry traction:

Pilot Sport AS3 will have better traction and steering than OEM. This is the new hot ticket AS tire coming out in a couple months.

Bridgestone RE970AS will have slightly better grip and better steering response.

Continental DWS has traction that is probably equal to worse, and less steering response.

Nitto Motivo will have about equal steering and traction

I may have to take a look at those AS3's. Non-directional tread is good, I like easy tire rotating. How about the Toyo proxes 4+. I've seen some good reviews of those, and I've been happy with the Toyos on my truck, so I feel some brand affinity. Lastly, I'm noticing almost everything is heavier than the Primacy HP's; would 2-3 pounds more per wheel be noticeable to off the track?

I'm glad this thread is here, because I've had to make the sudden and unexpected decision to make my car a daily driver. I'm curious as to how well the Michelin Supremacy tires work in all weather conditions or if they don't at all. I'd really like to save money by keeping the stock tires, but if I'm forced to get all seasons, that's the price to pay for safety.

Where it comes to all season tires, the tire store that I went to recommended both Yokohama Avid Envigors and Kumho Ecsta 4xs. If anyone has a recommendation of one over the other, it'd be greatly appreciated.

I'm new to the sports car scene, so I feel over my head.

Oem tires have no traction at all on snow. I missed the weather report once and had to drive home in light snow, was NOT fun. For a daily driver in winter, your best bet is proper winter tires. It doesn't actually cost any more in the long run because you're splitting your tire wear between the sets, so each set lasts longer. I'm only considering all seasons because I can't bear to leave the car in the garage all winter, so I'm only looking for dry cold temperature traction and something that's not completely useless if I get surprised by a snow shower. I still may just go with summer tires after the OEM wear out.

Mine came with the bridgestone all seasons stock and they are miserable in the snow. I get this feeling of a near death experience every time i have to make a turn in snow. This car definitely needs winter tires for the snow and ice. I may be going the route of putting winters on my stock wheels and buying a second set of wheels with performance all seasons since the weather in NY is unpredictable

Not necessarily... The OEM B'stone Turanza EL400-02 all-seasons are about the WORST you can get. Rated 21st out of 21 tires in Tire Rack's "standard touring all-season" tires. Worst tires in a pretty crappy category. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey...wws=N&showcm=N

I test-drove a couple of new Mazda3's on those tires, and the handling was crap enough even in the dry that we fixed up our old '05 instead...

Guaranteed that Conti ExtremeContact DWS will be lightyears better than the OEM all-season crap-tires.

That said, of course dedicated winters will be better in the snow/ice/cold. But IMO there are some potentially viable all-season options for those who want to run one set all year.

Yea these things suck. I was fishtailing going 5mph through some icy snow. I had stock Toyos on my old tc that were great in the snow. I wonder how those would be on the frs

Yeah I agree, the toyos that came with my tc are great in snow but not so great on ice, but I enjoy the little slip I get :]
