My 2016 BRZ just started doing this... I didn't hear a peep for the first 3000 miles, I just hit 3100 and I hear it now. I've been putting 91 octane fuel in it since I bought it. I also have the issue where my RPM drops to 400-600 randomly at idle, but it's never stalled itself and I considered it to be normal operation of the motor.

FWIW, I had the same idle issue until I flashed over to the Cosworth 1.0 tune. Sometimes the idle would dip so low I thought it was going to stall. But with the Cosworth, the idle speed is rock solid even with the A/C switching on and off.

So far what seems to have worked for me in keeping the chirps away is running ethanol free 93 octane and installing the Forester oil cooler.

crickets moved in at around 3400 miles for me. I'm assuming their stay is permanent...

Yes, you can try to fight it off, warranty replacements. Whatever else. Its best to get to the point where you dont pay any attention to it anymore. Just make everything else louder.

Not necessarily. Mine take long vacations but still pop by every once in a while to just say hi and catch up on current events.

Just FYI, the cheapest gas station around me just happens to be across the street from my work. I fill up there 99% of the time. It's a Chevron, and I only get loud crickets when I fill up somewhere else. I also don't get them with Shell.

Had them only once when I went on a cruise to British Columbia, had to fill up at a fast gas had them the whole stay there then when I got home and filled up with 91 - esso. Haven't heard a peep since (that was last August) 21,000 km on it as well.

So I finally tried that Lucas UCL. It was like 6 dollars from the Auto Parts store...I drove to get gas (crickets were chirping), and after filling up (still chirping), pulled to a parking spot. Dumped the Lucas UCL, waited a little bit, started the car up and immediately the chrips weren't as loud as right after adding gas.

I drove home (15 minutes?) and it's still this muffled cricket sound. It's still there but not as high pitched.

Exact same thing for me. I posted a few days ago saying I had crickets for the first time after 3400 miles... guess what? This was also the first time I filled up at a 76 station and then an Arco station. I normally exclusively use Chevron and occasionally Shell. Never had chirps until switching. Now that I've put a tank of Chevron in my car the chirping has gone away completely again and the engine isn't dipping RPM at idle...

I guess the moral is use Chevron gas?

Well Chevron may be Ethanol free. Lucky you

2015 FRS.

My crickets were installed at the factory in Japan. I never feed them, yet they seem to live on forever. Who cares ? Surely not me. They don't seem to bite.

I'm surprised not more users complain this engine sounds like an old air cooled VW or Porsche 912 when revved.

So after switching back and forth between ethanol and non ethanol gas a few times over the last month I've come to the conclusion that non ethanol gas is the way to go. Ethanol = crickets, non ethanol = nice and quiet. Too bad the nearest stations to get non ethanol premium are 30+ miles away so unfortunately not convenient. The only thing that bugs me is I haven't found non ethanol gas in anything other than 91 octane, never 93.

This is what I have found except with the added element of temperature.

Cold ambient temperatures (Under 60F) and ethanol = No crickets
Warm (60 to 70F) and ethanol = Possible crickets
Hot (70+F) = Cricket version of Lollapalooza

Any temperature with no ethanol = Cricket apocalypse

It makes zero difference what brand of gas I use or if it is 91, 93 or even 94 the rules above are consistent and predictable.
