Did they come out with a fix for the engine chirping?

I've started noticing the chirping, and I can't stand it. I'll pull up to a drive through window, and while waiting there, it's so loud...

Please tell me that Toyota has come out with a solution for this?

There isn't a permanent fix for it. They used to replace to fuel pump, but they crickets just came back over time. They came back within 1500 miles for me. I hear they aren't replacing them anymore, since it's just annoying and not detrimental to the car. I've gotten to the point where I just shut off the car when I'm waiting at the drive through window. The rest of the car makes up for this annoyance though.

Can it be heard from the outside?

Yes, it's MOSTLY heard from the outside... I don't hear it too much with my window up but when I roll it down, it's so loud..

Kinda embarrassing for a "sports" car to be chirping/squeaking when idling like that.

I figured so. I don't know what I'm worried about though, my exhaust is probably going to be obnoxiously loud anyway.

Most y'all won't want to read this but...

Obviously they're not finding a fix for this, they're still releasing 2014's with the same issue. So if the rumours can be believed that they're gunna release a new engine next year, I doubt that there will ever be a real fix... Sooo not only is your 013/014 86 underpowered compared to the 2015, but it'll also have the infamous chirp, I see our resale value plummeting.

I thought there was a new fuel pump (with a new part #) that apparently didn't chirp? I think dealers started installing them a couple weeks ago.

I am pretty sure it is the same green dot HPFP that still has crickets. At this point, I suspect we may not see a fix until the next major revision which won't be for a few years.

The crickets were driving me mad as well. So about a week ago I switched from Shell 92 octane with "at least 10% ethanol" to a 90 octane sans ethanol from 76. The chirping cleared up in a day and has been silent since then. I'm blaming the ethanol.

While it can be obnoxious for some owners with an 86, this chirping noise, amoung others, is the future as more and more cars go DI. I've been around other manufacturers cars that now sound almost like a "gasoline diesel" , while many others just have an audible "TICKTICKTICKTICK" as the car idles. Some cars hide it better based on price/purpose in life: keep in mind that the 86 wasn't designed to be some ultra quite car, it's to be fun to throw around, miles of smiles, and some track time tossed in.
In the end I'm fine with it, and even more-so when the alternative is to let the dealer perform surgery on my car because of a noise that doesn't mean anything.

I think there is some validity to this. My car has over 13,000 miles and just started chirping a few days ago. Perhaps here in Arizona we're now getting our 'winter blend'. I'll have to give 76 a try.

Ethanol free gas cures the crickets. Car runs better also.

Most pump gas is mule piss.
