When to do your first oil change, and why...
I've seen many on here recommending your first oil change at 1,000. I'm of the opinion that you should wait til 3,500-5,000 miles to do your first change. Here's why: The factory fill is 0w20 synthetic, so it's not dino oil. There may very well be small metallic shavings from break-in, but those all should be caught by the oil filter. The main reason to leave it in the recommended interval is this:
Quote:
What do these numbers mean? Basically the Moly, Zinc, and Phosphorus are higher than normal oils. This seems to be part of a stronger additives package put in to the factory fill. Quote:
If you changed at 1,000 miles will you ever notice a difference? Probably not. I just posted this as food for thought. |

Thats not too bad of a UOA, however after only 1400 miles its already a thin 20 weight oil.
Iron and Copper are already a bit high (due to break-in obviuosly). How thin will the oil be and how many ppm will be in there at the 7500 mile recommended first oil change? I would just assume get that stuff out of the engine. Edit: I am interested in seeing more UOA's from our FA20 to see whether the DI has fuel dilution issues just as nearly every other DI engine does. |

I haven no idea what your post just said lol. I just got an oil change though at around 1600mph based on what other members have said regarding the metal shavings.

Well, with scions complimentary service for first two years or 25,000 miles, every 5,000 miles is recommended by them, and it's free. So that is the route I will take. 5k, 10k, 15k, 20k etc..
I did ask the service tech about @ 1K, and he told me that's "old school'.... |

I think if this were beneficial low production high end sports cars like the Corvette ZR1, M3/5, GTR, etc. would recommend an early first change, but they dont. So I wont change it early. And how do we know the moly is part of an additive package as opposed to being left over from assembly lube or normal production process.

there are a number of places that do it they take a small sample of your oil and analyze it's contents. This provides a good analysis of your engines overall health, particularly whether you have coolant or gasoline enter your oil circulatory system. doing an oil test every 10-15k is an effective way to keep tabs on your engines health and provide warning signs to possible problems that will take a lot longer to show up "mechanically"
