Anybody who had this issue and solved it? I'm struggling to find out the cause.

Same issue re titened the strut tower bolts to spec noise is gone now
 , was killing me couldn't figure out what was causing the noise thought one of the cover was lose underneath but this solved it

Buried somewhere in here is a long thread about what I think is the same rattle you're getting. I have the same "issue" and had it on my last three cars with a similar setup, Volvo even replaced the column and strut bearings trying to get it to go away on my C30. Turns out that the electric steering has everything to do with it. Someone posted a really great technical drawing that illustrates the movement well. Don't worry about it too much.
