There are pros and cons to everything. I liked the Internet better when you could be 100% anonymous. It young, wild, and free. I actually got kicked off of Facebook because I refused to use my real name. It's not that hard to figure out who I am, but I just don't like my real name easily tied to every little comment I ever make. Nor people digging for shit to use fallacies against me. Of course the downside is you get the spammers, trolls, outright hate speech, etc... but whatever grow a pair and have good ways to moderate. I prefer the freedom over security.

Agree.

I also kind of miss the days when it took at least a bit of technical knowledge to even access the internet.

Crazy extension to this, I know. Should real life be like that then? Would you prefer not to know anyone's name or face, and nobody to know yours? Each encounter with another is then an individual event, with no concept of another's personality persisting to another encounter. Basically if you had two conversations about something, you wouldn't have any idea if it was the same person or two different people.

Side thought... Maybe that's what the Borg Collective is like. Are the Borg actually the path to real freedom!?!?

I mean back in the day (even for me growing up) you had different reputations in different towns/states. Something really bad happened you could just not go back for a while. People also forget after awhile... the Internet NEVER forgets.

Isn't it a good thing if assholes can't go from town to town messing shit up, then just moving on?

I mean, recognizing people change is a good thing though... Maybe the internet should forget. Timeout on keeping data seems like a good idea, especially since the rate of production of is increasing exponentially.

For security of the masses, yes. For individual freedom, not really. I do believe in second chances. Lord knows I've had plenty. Can't say the same for teenagers these days...

Still alive.

This is the only thing I've been driving. I had an awful lot of fun building it too.

i like the middle ground of both those options. i've got my real name, and i've got my forum name. my forum name has very few ties to me in reality unless i choose to make the association myself. but i generally use the same name on any forum i go on. it's an alternative identity that's taken on it's own form.

i've found that too much of either results in problems. full anonymity just results in bashing and name calling because nothing has repercussions, and everything becomes funny. full awareness of others is also bad for the same reasons, because it becomes too easy to harass people about their different but honest viewpoints, and many people don't know how to stop just maintaining things over an internet connection. everything becomes personal, all the time, and many won't stop until they've worked to destroy something in your day-to-day life.

so my nephews (1-1/2 and 3) discovered bee stings tonight.

we were all over at my parents house having supper outside (to social distance) in the backyard. had just finished eating, so the kids started running around like madmen playing with toys and the like, as they do.

on the corner of my parents lot, they've got a shed for yard tools and the like, and a garden next to it. between the shed and garden is a small space about 1-1/2' wide with a few widely-spaced concrete pavers laid down so they can tend to the back edge of the garden.

the kids were playing in that space with their tricycles, i believe attempting to add wood blocks between the pavers to make a smoother 'road' to ride across. then one of them let out a blood curdling scream... we look over and the younger one is getting attacked by a bee, repeatedly. his older brother ran halfway across the yard as soon as it started, so he thought he was safe from the bee's. as we try to rush the youngest into the house to tend to his bee sting on his arm, another bee made a 'beeline' (finally learned where the term was coined from tonight) to the oldest halfway across the yard, past all the adults either sitting or now running around, and stings him on his ear. like they had been 'tagged' by the hive for disturbing it.

after calming them down and tending to their wounds, we went back and figured out there had been a board in that small space that had been propped up against the shed. the bee's were using that board as a sort of cover for their front entrance, and the kids moved it to build their road.

the rest of the night was spent discussing the best methods to dismantling a shed with 'surprises' under it...

Good story!

What a great opportunity for grandpa to teach his grandchildren about honey and bees. Just set up a hive and transfer the queen over (if they are honeybees), if they aren't, just smoke the little bastards and hit em with RAID!

Spent 3 days with a professional studio recording service videos for work. Holy shit is that hard.

Always look at the camera, the tone of your voice changed a little on that line, your hands came into frame on that arm motion, you stumbled on that word a bit, you said "coin" first and then "token".........every little thing has to be perfect.
