I just looked up a video on it, it actually didn't look too bad. Slightly worse then the VG33 in my Xterra.

And I remember when under the hood looked like this, they put the spark plugs right on top, where you couldn't miss them - AND you could change them from either side - AND you could just crawl in there to do it -

But how does it know that the calendar flipped? My guess is there is a small internal battery that died, thus causing it to start in a default state where it doesn't know that the time flipped yet. It would be strange in a car system, but this sounds very similar to an issue I came across a while ago, relating to a different number flip.
