Gasoline chemistry over-simplified :

Fuel combusts with the right mix (best at around 14.7:1) of air (the stoichimetric ratio) and an ignition source. Energy is release when long, complex carbon chains are broken into CO and CO2.

The higher the octane rating, usually the more additive is used. The additive contains much less energy than the fuel itself. And hence, for a given volume of fuel, the higher octane version contains less energy than the lower octane version.

Octane rating affects the speed of combustion (the higher the octane rating, the slower the combustion). Alcohol can raise the octane rating, but adding alcohol will lower the energy content of fuel.

No worry about high octane fuel causing a car to explode.

It's also less likely to ignite prematurely. It reduces detonation moreso.

just got back from vancouver bc, I find it funny that 94 is about the same price US or CANADA.

So if I used 94 all the time.... i would never lose?

Another thing I noticed is that the higher the octane the better my gas mileage ..... atleast to a certain point especially driving within the city. * I only tried up to 94 but it stays true.

The car can probably get something out of 94 since it can supposedly adjust about 5% or so. But not at those insane prices. Just nuts. I'm mad when I pay near $3 a gallon for 93.

**imagine long winded multi-page argument about how "if I lived where YOU live I'd be way more mad about X, Y, and Z!!!"**

Ok, now lets argue about different ways of rating octane instead.

I thought lots area has 92? or that's WA only.

I did notice oregon gas are a bit more expensive thou, probably cause someone else has to pump for you.

You go faster when you fill up with high octane fuel because you spend more money. The lower weight of your wallet after paying for the 100 octane will provide an improved Hp/Weight ratio.

That also explains the huge price jump between 94 and 101; guarantees that you will go more fasterer

Actually, Vancouver BC gas rating is not rated the same way as in the USA.

Our Chevron 94 gas here is more like Chevron90.5 in the USA.

I guess for comparison from the same Dyno and Tuner, our CAD94 here gets around 220-230whp on a boosted car, and around 270-280whp on US92 on a similarly boosted car. Values aren't exact, but there is a significant difference.
