Alternate 18" Tire Size

I'm planning on a GR86 Premium with the 18" wheels. My only issue is the 215/40 tires. Our roads on Long Island are less than spectacular and I'm concerned the 40 series will get chewed up and give a most unpleasant ride. I'm thinking of removing the 40's right after delivery and selling them and going to a 215/45 with either Contis or Michelin Ultra High Performance A/S.

Is there a fitment issue with wheel well clearance?
Will the dynamics of the car suffer greatly?
Am I over thinking this?

I'd sooner trade for base model's (or other) 17s with 215/45-17. 215/45-18 is nearly an inch bigger in diameter vs. 215/40-18, that's a lot...
Another option would be 225/40-18s on the 18" wheels.

I think you need to try it first. You might be surprised. I wouldn't increase the rolling radius by fitting 45 profile tyres on the 18s. If you want better ride quality and potentially a bit more resilience to less than perfect roads you're best off dropping to some lightweight 17s.
