Gen2 hpde car?

Thinking of getting a GR86 for HPDE. Won’t be a DD, basically dedicated car for track days. Previously I’ve always just driven a track oriented car model stock.

Makes sense to go for base trim right? In case I bin it parts are cheaper?
Since it will get a 4 pt cage and harnesses, interior is irrelevant?

Does the spoiler on the premium trim have any effect at all on aero? I can get other better options for aero for a track build anyway right?

Any reason to go with full cage on a dedicated track day car? I’m inclined to trailer from now on for driving comfort and in case it breaks down/crashes. The stress of figuring out how to get a broken car back from the track is too much otherwise.

Unless you just want to have a cage, this car is plenty strong enough to not collapse under reasonable HPDE circumstances.

That’s what I’ve heard. That’s the fantastic thing about tracking a modern car.

What’s a full cage good for then? Mostly W2W?

Cage / half-cage can be useful if you plan to get a bucket seat and 6+ point harness. Don't forget to get an appropriate HANS device along with those.

Yeah definitely. Carry over from my current car. I don’t like stock seats and 3 pt anymore on track after getting used to buckets and harnesses. I have some Brides from the Miata but they’ll probably stay with the Miata. I like Sparco Evo, OMP WRC or Racetech. I hope the 86 doesn’t have any problems fitting seats like the Miata does. Trying to get buckets in a Miata is a rabbit hole of compromises…

Make sure to not get just the seats without the rest of the safety system.

TCD will track prep my car. It will be done safely. My question here is more whether base trim or premium trim makes sense for a mostly track car. But maybe the answer is obvious.

Base, zero performance difference other then weight for amenities you would likely rip out like heated seats.

How far are you gonna go with the track prep? Fully gutted, remove air bags, gut the doors, remove ac and heat?
I got about 400-450 pounds out of my gen 1 track car. That is a lot of performance gain, but it is truly a track only car now.

What kind of track days do you do? Hdpe or time trials or w2w?

I have delusions of making a full caged track car but more realistically for where I’m at, a half cage street legal hpde car is more practical. Safety is paramount though. It probably will be ttsck only - not seeing with my stable why i would drive this car on the street except to track and to the shop. Thinking of trailering to the track anyway. But something street legal to street park would be great.
