What's this clunk sound coming from 2nd gear after letting go of the clutch ?
I've tried letting the clutch up slowly and it still clunks unless I give it gas before it reaches the friction point, so I'm kind of launching it a tiny bit. I don't hear the sound if I rev to 2.8-3k then shift to 2nd
Does anyone else hear this in their MT car too & is it normal ? or does 2nd gear require really really precise foot work on the clutch and gas pedals ? |

Sounds like a bit of "2nd gear backlash" ..... (I just made that up)......
Does it "clunk" when the transmission is warm .... ?? No, that wouldn't be "normal" for my car. humfrz |

Normal for me. Even in neutral just clutch in and out with window open and I hear a clunk.

hmmmm.......does it do that with any other geat change ..... if so, it could be somewhere in the driveline, other than the clutch.
You might consider checking the transmission fluid level. Maybe check the clutch adjustment. Maybe bleed the clutch fluid system. If still under warranty .... maybe take it back to the dealer. humfrz |

Mine does it more often than not as well. I think it's just drivetrain slack. I'm going to be getting an aluminum driveshaft soon so hopefully that will eliminate most of it.

Occurs to mine as well, but can only hear it with the windows open and in a quiet setting. Sounds like it's coming from the left-rear wheel area, but that could just be because the window is open to my left.

I get this too when shifting into second after leaving my driveway. I'm not sure if it's there when it's warm, as I don't recall hearing it. Though when it is cold, I definitely hear the clunk noise.

I'm betting it's the slop in the drive shaft. Mine kinda did this too till I got my aluminum shaft. Much more positive feel and no noise now

After reading the above posts, maybe they all do it, including mine, and I just can't hear it ...... too many guns going off back in the 60's .....
Back in the day, we could isolate "clunking" in the driveline by jacking up the rear of the car and one person rocking the rear wheel, while another person would crawl around under the car with an ear to the drivetrain. Most of the time the bad actor was a universal joint ..... humfrz |

Mine does this too. It's only really noticeable when I have the window down though.

So it's ok to hear it every time ? I've always tried to avoid making that sound by doing a mini launch on 2nd lol

It's slack in the driveline - when the engine is driving the wheels, the slack in the driveline will be taken up in one direction and when the wheels are driving the engine, the slack will be taken up in the other direction. What you are hearing is the rapid change of direction in the slack of the driveline.
The reason it doesn't happen in other gears is because the jump from 1st to 2nd is the biggest jump in ratios so sloppy shifts will have the biggest mismatch of RPMs (and if you are shifting slow, generally the wheels will be speeding the engine up when you take your foot off the clutch). Also, when the car isn't warmed up, going from first to second is always requires a bit of extra muscle and tends to make the shift happen slower which exacerbates the rev mismatch if you are shifting lazily and not rev-matching. |
