It looked so tiny!
I've been wanting to go to a hobby show like this, being a builder/modifier of diecast myself. Where do these take place, is there a fb page with announcements etc?

This one was in Hamilton. It was a huge international one. There are loads of smaller local ones scattered through the year. Not sure where they advertise. I found out about this one on a model forum.
Here are the major IPMS ones coming up. One in Toronto in May and London in September.

I am told that this ne is one of the best. Looks like it is perfect for you.

In their defense the turn out was way more than they expected. They figured about 50 entries and maybe 800 people and went way over. There were lineups over a block long at each door when they opened. You could see the "OH SHIT" looks on their faces. The judges had so much to go through in a limited time that I think they just glanced at everything and picked out a few to look closer at.
I also do not disagree with any of their picks and the winners deserved the wins. My concern was not that I didn't place but that they seemingly summerly dismissed mine with a single glance. In all probability this was likely due to the shear volume and time crunch.

Ah, I see. Wonder what made the turn out more than expected?

Was my first show so I don't really know. I believe the rules say that the judges may touch but I didn't see any do it there. Keep in mind that these guys are fanatics so even if they do touch your model they are going to know how and be very very careful. Very strict rules against the attendees touching anything. Automatic ejection from show.

Post covid over eagerness? Looking at the other big shows I see they all require preregistration so they know exactly how many there would be and be prepared.

Perfect paint on all the subjects seemed to be the order of the day. There were a handful of dirty armour in the diorama category but even most of those were clean and new.
There were a few rusty vehicles but they were completely rusty not just bits of rust and dull paint. There was one large model of an abandoned woody wagon that was completely rusty that took many awards. The "rust" look consisted of a perfectly even airbrushed coat of brown paint over the entire model. No variation, no different shades just one tone of rust. It was a very cool model (I think it was scratch built) but the rust was not convincing to me at all. Nothing rusts completely the same. Eventually the one model magazine will have pictures of some of the stuff.

Out of curiosity I went to the IPMS site to see what the builds there were like.

No surprise they all appear to have just rolled off the assembly line!

Here is one of the very rare ones on there that is "weathered"

To me, the unweathered models look too much like a....... model.
