got my GEICO renewal policy today....F'K it went up $22.80...gonna check some other insurance companies...my understanding is if a insurance company has massive losses then that's a factor in policies being raised.....F'K meH!

Right on the money, bro. I would feel more sorry if I didn't get a $52.46 increase myself.

Well, if insurance was to go down, that would be because the market Value went down as well. I don't think I want that.

Yep, I'm with GEICO as well, and yes, it went up last renewal. It went up even more since moving to the Big lsland. $50 a month. Everything costs more here.....

I spoke to a GEICO rep last night said premiums were raised because they had big losses.

I just got off the phone with a rep from Progressive Insurance. Same coverage as GEICO they have a 6 month policy for me at $421.00 or $455.00 with Gap Insurance. Rep from Progressive told me they keep their $$$ in-house and don't invest customer's $$$ to make profit.

Anyone have Progressive Auto car insurance?
Is Gap Insurance really necessary?

I have until April 12 to decide whether or not I wanna switch car insurance companies. My GEICO policy expires on 4-15-16.

I have Progressive. They've been good to me - lowest rate out of all the competition, and gave me more than fair market value when my 10 series got totaled (according to my own research into how much a 10 series sold for around my area with similar mileage).

Sounds like you don't know what GAP insurance is for. It's insurance for a very specific case with very specific conditions:

- you financed your car
- your car gets totaled
- they estimate your car at a value that is below what you owe on the loan

They will cut you a check for the difference between what the car is worth, and the loan amount, up to 25% of the "actual cash value" of the car.

Example:

- you owe 20k
- car actual cash value is estimated at 16k
- GAP pays out 4k (25% of 16k)
- you now have no car and no balance on the loan.

Now, you can clearly see the flaw - Progressive GAP only pays for up to 25% of the ACV, so if the difference between what you owe and what the car is worth is too much, you will still be stuck paying off the balance of the loan even after GAP, and this is what the car dealerships try to scare you into buying their GAP, which they say covers up to 100% of ACV, but also costs a buttload more. (Toyota offered GAP to me for 800 bucks, but I went with Progressive's GAP for only 40ish bucks a year)

GAP is really only needed within the first few years of a new car's life when depreciation is greatest and payments on the loan haven't matched the depreciation. After the KBB value of your car / used car prices of your car model year + mileage drop below your loan balance, just stop paying for GAP. No point in continuing to do so.

Hope that helps.
