Rev Limiter Operating Differently (after a money shift)
Welp, last Sunday I done it. I kinda sorta money shifted from 5th to 2nd. I was going between 90-100km/h when I grabbed 2nd. I almost caught it in time and dumped my foot onto the clutch and saved it... I think? Thankfully my BRZ (2018) kept going and I got home 90min later without any issues. No leaks. No CELs. Power band feels normal. Engine sounds normal. Status quo.
However today I went to an autocross event and I noticed immediately that my engine revs are no longer bouncing off the limiter. The engine revs up and will smoothly hold itself steady at the red line. No pinging, no bouncing, just sits there, foot buried on the gas pedal, engine holding perfectly at the limit. So now I'm slightly concerned that perhaps I did damage something... Thoughts? 2018 BRZ, base model, zero power mods. ~55'000km. |

Maybe you unlocked a cheat code for a smooth rev limiter? |

my cars done that from time to time. some theories on having grip and slowly building rpm's gives the ecu a chance to catch the revs before they get out of control.
but if you go and bang out some donuts, or start sliding around in the rain, it starts bouncing... i think you're being too gentle after your 'oops' fortunately, it was the cheapest money shift ever! i did the same 5th-2nd shift at about 50. i was reaching for 4th and revved for 4th, so it was still a shock when the shift light banged on and the car lurched...

Second can indeed do that. When shifted through the band. It isn’t just the revs it is the impact of it happening so quickly.

Maybe you just got lucky. I suggest you disconnect the negative terminal of the battery, have a half a beer, reconnect the battery terminal and see if it resets itself. Of course, this method is coming from an old man that, when I first got a computer and it acted up, I would just unplug it, have a class of whisky, take a nap and then plug it back in. |

don't worry about it, all you did is probably tighten some slack on the chains.
I almost money shifted it once as I saw my rpm jump to 8.2-8.3k & caught it with my feet. |
