I used to, until I attended first autocross and ran over half the cones on the course.

Now, I'm like

Took a 1200 mile road trip, previous front bumper was sandblasted essentially. Hood has huge dent (down to metal) from driving behind an RS4 with sticky tires. My car isn't a show car so as long as its mechanically sound, I shrug it off.

Funny enough, I looked at my front bumper the other day, and sighed at the amount of stone chips. But then I remembered "lol it's a cheap, replaceable car, who cares?" And then stopped worrying about it.

Why do you want to hurt yourself or your feeling, man? Let it go. The car doesn't feel a thing about it got dinged and scratched. You are the one who feel hurt on behalf of it? So what's the point of doing that? There are more to life than worrying about scratches and dings.

This is not gonna be the last car in my life. I will have to let it go someday, sooner or later. And when you does let it go, you will never feel any worry afterwards. So why do you have to worry now?

- i would have to turn taps off and have the handle face a certain direction. if i screwed up, i'd have to leave the tap and redo it again 5 times or until it feels right.

- doing assignments or tests, if i write something and it doesn't feel right, i'd have to erase it and write it again 5 times.

- i fear contamination and germs. too many examples to list here.

everything in my life seemed to be run by numbers and i was seriously going crazy cause it was controlling me. eventually i just had to control it myself. i still have a bit of it but it's not as bad as it was 15 years ago.
How did you get over this and what did you do specifically that helped? Did you just give up over time because it was too exhausting or did some life changing event occur that make you shift in a completely different direction? It seems no matter what I do it just keeps me in a obsessive state of mind that that is hard to pull myself out of. I'm trying to figure out how to get over this.

I don't think it's irrational to want to keep the car nice looking; after all I paid hard-earned money for it and take good care of it (like I do with all my things in general). I do, however, think it's irrational to expect it to stay pristine if you drive it any amount. I expect scratches and chips from normal wear and tear, the occasional door ding etc. What would really upset me is someone keying my car.

This ^^^^^ Exactly this!
We live in a world filled with hazards to our cars and we do what we can to keep them as nice as possible. Although we have to accept the inevitable road hazards when it comes to deliberate damage (contrary to popular belief most door dings are NOT deliberate) we are talking a serious reason to get pissed.

i realized it was consuming my life and almost every thing i did was getting effected. instead of enjoying things i spent too much time doing things to a specific number of times. i wanted to see someone about it but i was around 15 and didn't know who to talk to without sounding crazy. once realizing it i forced myself to stop doing certain things even if it felt like i needed to.. took awhile but i felt better.

If driving a car the way I want to results in a few scratches here and there I would take that trade everyday of the week. It's a car, of course you would rather not have the scratches but if scratches makes you love the car less... Sell your car and get a new hobby, maybe coin collecting?

I have always been too worried about dents and scratches. But recently got into a 5mph fender bender which pretty much nullified any of my efforts over the past 4 years. So just remember, even if you keep your car bubble wrapped, you could still mess it all up from not paying attention for 1 second.

One thing though you have to learn is to roll with it when bad things happen. A rock chip on your hood and bumper seems really bad at first, but after you get a few thousand of them it's not so bad. I found I could just paint over all of them with a $50 Dr. Colorchip kit in that case. And dents are't so expensive once you've racked up a few of them, my dent guy will pull 5 dents per panel for a set price.

The moment you drive the car on public roads, in essence you're endangering it. Yet, what good is a car you can't drive unless its a museum piece.

I do obsess a bit about the condition of my car, fortunately I do have paint protection film for the whole front so I no longer worry about the small stone chips that made my used Impreza look bad. PPF actually has made my car look like its never seen highway, I have to point out the pitted windshield to show my car spends a large amount of time there. Scratches do annoy me, but a very good detailer should be able to eliminate a lot of the light surface scratches. Or if you want to be proactive, then get something like Opticoat which will give another clear coat layer and hopefully it no longer is a problem, the only minus is they can be expensive to get a detailer to apply depending on the product. Dings and dents, thanks to PDR I actually had 3 large dents removed on my passenger door and one on the passenger drip rail too. Can't even tell it ever happened. Repair was very inexpensive too.

Frankly these days the only thing that will annoy me forever is if I had the car get body work done and its not perfect, particularly the paint. I think I was the bane of my company's contracted bodyshops because when I was inspecting the company fleet to be resold...a lot of them had paintwork that needed to be redone.

I do think its good you care about the condition of your car. Just note the things your obsessing over, can be remedied pretty easily.
