Where are you guys buying your Snell helmets in the GTA area?

JRP, or Royal Distributing are good options for M rated. If you are after an SA rated helmet you can also check out CSC Racing in Newmarket. I believe JRP carries SA rated helmets as well.

An M2010 motorcycle helmet would also work, those are a lot easier to find.

I just picked up an M2010 helmet this past weekend. It's and HJC FG-17. Great helmet if you aren't looking to spend a ton of money. Only $250 with tax

You can buy mine...lol. There are lots of companies that have helmets. If your just getting started, a simple M class helmet will suffice. They can be had for about $100+.

Anything that says Snell rated typically means SA ratings, which are approved for multiple impacts (against a rollbar, etc). Any M rated helmets I've seen are only good for a single hit.

Some of the key differences are here, but the most important is the multi impact rating that comes with an SA rated helmet. If you hit the roof, pillar or roll bar once with an M rated helmet it's no good. An SA rated helmet will take multiple hits without issue. http://www.racinghelmetguide.com/aut...t-ratings.html

Both are "snell" rated. But SA is for Competitive Automotive Sports
SA2010 - "The capacity for impact protection is determined by direct measurement of the shock delivered through the helmet to a head form when the helmeted head form is dropped in a specified manner onto any of three unyielding anvils. A fourth anvil is used to test impact protection for repeated strikes against a roll cage assembly." This is what wparsons is saying. Edit - M does not seem to have repeated strikes test. M2010 - "The helmet must also resist penetration by sharp edged and pointed projections and projectiles. This capacity is tested by placing the helmet on a head form and dropping a metal cone of specified mass and geometry onto the shell. The tip of this cone must not penetrate to the head form." http://www.smf.org/standards/sa/SA2010/sak2010_final http://www.smf.org/standards/m/2010/m2010_final

So SA protects you from roll bars and M protects you from jousting?

M ratings are meant for motorcycles, and are a single use (impact) helmet. If you hit it against something, it's garbage. They also have to have wider sight angles than an SA helmet needs.
For HDPE and autox, it probably won't matter (I've heard some autox organizations joke that anything better than a hockey helmet is fine ), but for time attack or any car with a roll cage I would bet that they would mandate SA helmets. Even some lapping organizers want SA rated... PCA (Porsche club of America) mandates SA rated for lapping days, but the UCR allows SA or M.
