BMWs M12 engine was a turbo 4 cylinder. It sounded beastly and in qualifying spec could make 1400 hp... The difference between then and now is they get 5 engines for the year, where the M12 would do 10 quali laps then explode.

Those, my friends, were the good old days.
Only 4 engines this year. Ricciardo and Magnussen have already used 1.

Going to be a lame season unless something is done about Merc's advantage.

I realize that Vettel dominated for years, but it was never this large or boring of a margin. Plus every time Vettel started dominating, FIA would outlaw whatever it was that helped them gain the advantage with the car. No such thing has been done to the Mercedes car which appears to be making something like 100 more hp then the rest of the field.

Mercs advantage comes from their clever turbo packaging, they can't just ask merc to change their engine design. Anything else the FIA does is likely to effect the rest of the field equaly.

Sure, they're not the old screaming V12's but it's still entertaining to watch and follow. I never really bought into whining about the engines because this is the future, turbo Hybrids are what the new Hypercars are using and F1 is a reflection of that or vice versa.
Look around the automotive industry, everyone is going with smaller boosted engines. Ford Ecoboost. Porche 918/McLaren P1/LaFerrari. Hell, even the 2016 Nismo GT-R is supposed to come with a KERS system.
Just fucking embrace it already or change the channel.

As for Merc; yes, they're way ahead but the others are making headway. Ferrari and Vettel did what they couldn't do last year; score a poduim. Look at what Sauber did yesterday. Renault is properly fucked, I don't know who in their camp made the car go from bad to worse but they need to be cut from the team. McLaren-Honda is gonna have a rough year, I feel bad for Alonso and Button...

Just booked a Hotel in Mexico City near the racetrack. Considering the cost of a 4 star hotel and airfare along with the exchange rate.. It looks like I'll be able to attend an F1 race for a quarter of the cost of going to Austin.

Sure, waking up in a bath tub with my kidneys missing is always a possibility but F' it..

It's that much cheaper? May I ask roughly how much a race weekend is going to cost per person?

Recently Dan Gurney suggested a method to reinvigorate F1 racing for spectators and drivers, ban wings. It'll never happen, Bernie needs the advertising space to generate revenue, but it would be more exciting than the current formula.

We don't know yet because the tickets aren't on sale yet but hotel and airfare is shaping up very nicely. There will be extra expense because we're going to be there for 5 days full days and do some touristy stuff too but we're estimating $1k per person for all of it which is pretty incredible. When we tried to do Austin a couple years back we had estimated $2500 per person and we decided to sell our tickets and canceled the trip.

We did see some airfare below $500 for both of us round trip However, haven't booked a flight yet.

I've had good experiences domestically and internationally using Airbnb. Often you'll find a nice place for far less than a hotel and learn a little more than the average tourist about local culture without being forced to listen to a time share pitch.

Nothing wrong with the powerplant.

Everything wrong with selling parade laps as a 'competition'.

I attended the USGP last year, spent about $2000 for two people and that's with free lodging and flight (cousin works for SWA and have a friend in Autsin) so I'd plan on an easy $3500 weekend.

Going to the Canadian GP this year since it's within driving distance but I have no friends in Montreal so I'll be booking a hotel. Will report back on costs...

Thing is, the hyper-cars aren't fuel limited. If they could rev the V6s out to 24KRPM, even they could sound relatively sweet.
